Oh no... I dance. You can't get me off the dancefloor at Footwork, the Gallery, and especially at Comfort Zone!
For some reason, trance doesn't do it for me whatsoever. I need a hard baseline, good lyrics (not a necessity), and a wicked beat for me to dance. Trance, imo, is too flighty and ambient. Nothing about it makes me want to dance.
Good example: The new track, Faithless - Insomnia (Rene Amesz and Peter Gelderblom's 2006 Mix) is a wicked house track. Nathan Barato and a few other Toronto DJs have been playing this a lot lately. In the track, at 4:40, the track breaks into a trance beat. The beat is epic and really really compliments the track, but there's no way to dance to it. If you pay attention to the crowd during this breakdown, I'm not the only one who feels this way. The most you can do is throw ur hands up and shout for the DJ.
Now I don't know about you, but I don't worship my DJs. I respect my DJs and love 'em for what they do for me. But when I go out I go out to dance my ass of and party it up with my friends. When it comes to trance, it honestly does nothing for me.
... and yes, I know that this forum is entitled TranceAddict. I don't like trance, but I do enjoy being a member of this community. This is one of thee most active forums online, and I enjoy posting on it. |

I could agree with you there.
Ferry Corsten - Rock Your Body Rock is one of my all time favorite tracks, but other than that, there's not many other trance tracks I enjoy.
There's something about house that just DOES IT for me. |

'Flighty and ambient' only describes one type of Trance (or two depending on how you look at it) -- though many assume anything with a hard bassline is techno or with a tribal beat is house. The majority of great tracks these days encompass elements that cross different genres.
For those tunes that are borderline Trance/House then you usually have the Househeads describe it as a House track and the Tranceheads describe it as a Trance track.
As for your example of Ferry Corsten - "Punk" being Trance...I'd have to disagree there, it's electro and it somehow gets attention in Tranceland simply because it's Ferry's tune. |

there are some elements in this track which make it a trance track:
the bpm of the original track, certain sounds that are mostly used in trance tracks, the "electro" part does not sound like electro at all imho. |

DannyPink - I see what you are saying, but I'd have to agree with the other peeps here that 'you haven't heard the right kind of trance then.' There's DEFINITELY some trance sets out there that just hammer my brains and make me want to dance... the euphoric breaks are a moment to catch the breath before it comes hammering again. House is my true love, but I certainly do enjoy trance...in fact, i was saying to Leap the other day 'its been a while since I've heard some trance at a club!!' Time to head to the guv sometime soon, methinks. That's why I love all access events...i get the best of all worlds. Btw, that faithless track is SIC. talk about a throwback remix ... heavenly.
Jon jon, agree with you that trancey portions are making their way into a lot of housey stuff. My general knowledge of the industry isn't deep enough to really make a call, but I see/hear the patterns.

i still like trance today as i liked it back in the prime around 99-00. but its completely different nowadays. When i make a trance cd these days, i'm much more selective, because 70% of the trance songs coming out are 'been there, done that.' and if i put songs like that on my cds, i'd probably hate trance, cause its not doing anything different. Nowadays it takes much more effort to find a trance gem then it used to. So my trance cds look very different now as theres a lot more genre crossing going on, where you have the presence of trance wrapped in styles of house, progressive, electro etc. And house is also changing a lot since it used to be, where i find a lot of house is leaning towards trancey breakdowns opposed to the filtered sound of years ago.
without evolution, everything starts to sound boring and the same. It took me a long time to realize this, because when trance was predominantely the only music i'd listen to some years back, i'd want it to never change as i loved the state it was at. But now i realize how necessary the change is. Only really talented trance producers can still bang out a fresh (or at least semi-fresh melody). |
