As I said religion is certainly PART of the argument although you cant say that all Australians are against this kind of idea and just muslims encourage it.

Certainly people in positions of power should not have approval to act in such a manner. I guess the same should be said for high profile sports stars that commit crimes against women and get away with it?

Send the gift first PKC!!
Couldn't have said it better so I'm not going to try. :D

Anti Islamic propaganda... the media is just preying on your insecurities and prejudices. Don't believe everything you read. This has likley been mis-interpreted by journalists (and we all know how accurate and non-biased they are) and blown out of proportion. Get a clue, move out of your Tassie shacks and learn about the world before you condemn a whole religion/people based on "facts" portrayed on the 5 oclock news.

chew my balls knuckle. this has nothing to do with journalism or my "tassie shack". ill go toe-to-toe with you on any issue if you'd like?

it hasnt been "misinterpreted", unless of course you could possibly point out how it could mean anything else?

its this kind of pandering to unacceptable ideas that allows them to continue unchallenged. and if youre gonna argue islam ISNT used to subjugate women then youre a lost cause

i always love the assumption people make when you disagree with them, that youre somehow less educated than they are, or "taught by the 5 oclock news". typical arrogant bull from people far less capable :haha:

Of course it's only part of the arguement, but you're confusing two issues here Charlee. First of all, this isn't about anyone "getting away" with anything. It's about someone preaching a rhetoric which is unacceptable.

If the head of the AFL or any other sporting code came out and said what has been said he would be sacked - pure and simple, and no-one wouldn't be defending whether or not he was "misinterpreted'.

I did hear on the radio this morning that there has been a fair amount of backlash from within the muslim community which is encouraging to hear.

I am querying why everyone is so quick to go on about how wrong this kind of talk/act is once it comes from a muslim. As I said before maybe I am broadening the subject a little but as a woman it makes me sick to think the same people who joke about girls "asking for it" when it comes to people they respect such as footballers are quick to jump in our defence when a muslim makes such comments.

As I said if you are all so worried about womens rights where is the thread about the DVD young Australian boys are selling in schools that show them raping a 17 year old girl!! They are no different to those Lebanese boys that gang raped those girls in Sydney.

Lets confront the issue as a whole and not at one person/community involved!

I am not confused about the issue. I am not in any way making excuses for what has been said.

I think you're making as bigger generalization here as your accusing others of doing. I think you'll find if any footballer, sportsman or whatever made those comments the same people would be equally as outraged.

People joking about someone "asking for it", while tastless/inapropriate in itself, is COMPLETELY different to a religious leader (or any type of leader for that matter) actually preaching it when explaining their ideals etc.

The Lebanese boys actually used religion as a defence Charlee.

And the DVD has nothing to do with womens rights, it's about a bunch of sick little boys - and they will get what is coming to them.

When all the AFL scandals came out about girls being raped/assaulted how many Australians said openly to the public that they "asked for it"? Tonnes! People were saying that girls who put themselves in front of these men dressed the way they do deserve what they get.

The only difference here is admittance and its been tied to a religion. Yes he is an important figure who has many followers, but so are these other people in the public eye.

So is it ok to do this to women as long as you dont say it is in public? If Australia objects to rape and sexual assault so whole heartedly then why were the other public figures not put on the chopping block? Because they are our heroes?

1. The mufti can't be deported because he's an Australian citizen, and has been here since the early 80s. Citizenship can't be revoked. Australia is as much his home now as any other citizen's, and there are plenty of people who were born here who subscribe to the same un-Australian values.

2. Islam is not the only religion known for subjugation of women. The more fundamental streams of many religions have women at the bottom of the pile. What about the Exclusive Brethren? The fundamental Mormons, the ones who believe in bigamy and forcing 13 year old girls to marry old men? Even some of the Dutch Free Reformed Church (Calvinists) have some funny ideas about the role of women. Sexism is ingrained in society, it just so happens that Islam is very visible at the moment and is constantly being made out to be worse than it is. I'm sure there are plenty of fundies on the Christian fringe preaching that women-improperly-dressed-are-to-blame-for-rape quietly within their little churches, but they are left alone because they are Christian.

Take every muslim out of Australia and I can assure you the drop in rape figures would be minimal.
