You go from one key to the next- you don't have to stay in the same key the whole time, you are just supposed to move throughout the keys using the corresponding keys.

Im not so into the harmonic mixing either. But that doesnt mean Im a bad DJ or that I dont have a ear for it :rolleyes:. Sometimes when Im looking through my records I just imagine with a certain record how it would sound if I'd mix it in with the track that's playing and I can tell just by imagining if its in key or not.
But like other guys already said it limits your freedom of choosing tracks.
And if you mix techno, minimal etc it doesnt have to be in key at all.
Neither does it have to be in key with trance/house. I just don't mix two breakdowns or two melodies with each other but I mix the second track in when the first track builts off and there arent much melodies left to be "out of key".
Besides when you're in a club who gives a if you're mixing in key or when you make a small trainwreck? Even when listening to a set at home I don't give a unless they really mix vocals or something through a melody of another track.
Mixing harmonically doesnt make a mix right, it just makes it sound smoother. |

As much as you want to dismiss the idea.. it does subconciously kill the vibe on the dance floor, and up the energy in a set.
Post a playlist? rofl, im not here to compare playlists.. nor do i need to prove anything to any ta's. Ive played at parties and have been offered to play at a very nice club (not main room) by a promoter that watched me mix.. i just do this as a hobby for my own and gf's listening enjoyement. I just couldn't see myself turning into a "dj" promoting himself, id rather just play at parties once in awhile. But when i do see local dj's mixing teribbly, key clashing etc and then i see someone who actually pays attention to the music its a huge difference.
Edit: I never said anywhere that i was good, nor did i say i was better than anyone else. |

| LOL OK. I wasn't aware we were mixing experimental music. If you think key clashes sound better then that is fine you can think that but for the rest of us I think it is safe to say that on key sounds better than off. |

Yeah, I'm just making the argument (mostly for the arguments sake_ that a lot of mixes can sound quite cool even if they aren't perfectly keyed. |

| And you can get all the gizmos and whatnot, write down the key of all your tracks, make charts, etc...but if you cant beatmatch well and work the mixer, it doesnt really mean . |
