Whilst I won't deny I have ever downloaded something which was technically illegal, I do feel that the situation needs careful monitoring.
We, the consumer, will loose out. Why? Those artists that are on the borderline, struggling to make a fraction as much as the massive music corporations, will be the ones to suffer. And ironically these artists are the ones that produce the better material. The upshot is that piracy will harm these artists more than any other.
It's all fairly logical really. So, make no mistake, by sharing files you are shooting yourself in the foot - or at least contributing to it. The porblem is that it really doesn't feel like you're commiting any sort of crime - it's just too east to do.
Anyway, please excuse me, I'm 99% of the way through downloading Borat the Movie. I must dash............

I am against piracy.
I buy all my music from beatport and other relevant digital download sites. It is sometimes annoying when you get territory error though because the label doesn't want a certain part of the world owning a song, I've had that issue a couple of times with Beatport.
But for the most part I can't fault it, and the audio quality you get from beatport is impeccable. |

If people stopped being so pikey, it wouldnt be an issue at all.
Trouble is there are toomany people who blatently take the piss when downloading, never paying for anything, music , film, software, etc.
This isn't on really.
However filesharing to some extent is good, unknown artists are found, impossible to get hold of legally tunes are made available, boosting lables/artist profiles.
The problem is people don't know where to stop.
They get a new upfront copy of a tune, then refuse to buy it when it's released.
Or they get an old album more or less impossible to track down, but then won't buy the ones you can find on the basis they can get it free.
This is where it all goes wrong. |

If an artist wants to let consumers enjoy his/her music for free, then by all means, share away. But as said already, you are shooting yourself in the foot when you download something illegaly. And no, it's not the same thing as going over to a friend's house and watching their copy. People always come up with that 'excuse' -- yet they download hundreds of songs and movies and for each one they say, "Well, I could have just listened to it at a friend's house." Or, "I could have just borrowed my friend's CD."
Your friend paid for something tangible (and I don't mean just a hardcopy like a DVD, if he legally downloaded the song, same thing) and you are listening to it, but that doesn't make it yours and you aren't keeping it.
No I don't advocate piracy.
But like everyone else, I'm a hypocrit at heart with a line that I draw. I've downloaded my fair share of cracks for tons of programs that I never would have paid for. Shareware becomes freeware. But never 'real' games... I mean, some things I pay for, others I don't. Any widely distributed game I'll pay for, sure -- I'll drive to Best Buy and spend $50 for something that I'll play for 2-weeks. Hell, I paid $50 for Doom 3 and I only played that for maybe 25 hours total -- same thing for Fable (even less hours.) But downloading large games like that just takes too much work... and there's always some problem along the way. They like to separate the games up into like 100 rar files that you have to download one by one, and you get to the 99th one and the server crashes, or it's a corrupt file.
But uh... when it comes to movies, completely different reason I don't download them. As mentioned, I want the studio to get my money. Anything I buy, especially a DVD, is because I appreciate the work put into it. My $20, at least a small part of it, goes to the studio who put together the DVD, all the actors, the director, etc. (and I realize in most cases the money from the DVDs in fact never is distributed to the cast/director, their share comes from ticket sales.)
Real reason I buy DVDs? I'm materialistic and I love my damn collection. I like being able to see that I have a DVD -- the artwork, the case, holding it there, seeing it on a shelf, lined up with all the others... categorizing them. I'm up to some 250 or so DVDs, thousands of dollars invested... and yet, I have friends who have just downloaded the same amount and have binders full of burnt DVDs with movies on them. Is it the same movie? Sure. But is it the same experience? Nope ;-/
And as for music... if it's just one song, I'll usually find a set I have it in and rip it out of the set and fade in/out both ends of the track. I may share it with a friend or two if I really like it, but I've never shared *any* of my music on file-sharing networks/programs like limewire, etc. I've downloaded more than enough, but never shared my own...
Will I download an entire album? Hell no -- I'm proud of my small collection of CDs as well. I mean, if you really appreciate someone's work, buy their damn work, don't steal it. How are you showing your 'support' by illegally downloading it? "LOL I LOVE YER WORK I JUST DOWNLOADED YOUR ALBUM OFF BEARSHARE!!1 KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK YER GREAT" ... the kind of logic is that exactly? I've never understood how someone can say they appreciate someone's work and then STEAL it. Backwards as hell.
If I told a friend to listen to uh, well, last album I bought was BT's This Binary Universe -- if I told a friend to listen to it and they told me the next day that they downloaded it and thought it was great, I'd probably denounce them as a friend and tell them to go themselves. No, I'm not kidding ;-/ |

No - but the small fry are, those artists who cannot afford to loose sales to piracy.
These guys cannot market their music in the same way that the big guys can. Thats why sales are up for them.
The rich get richer...... etc etc.

Meh. I find paying for MP3s a waste of money. You buy a CD or record, and it has resale value. Buy an MP3, and all you have is a little bit of data stored on your computer that is worth nothing. Hell, it will actually DEPRECIATE your computer!
Still, I hardly download music anyways, and usually only as a bit of research into a song before I delete it. I'm far too additicted to CD hunting to waste my time with MP3s. |

Simple way to look at all this.
Liveset downloading = good.
Illegal singles downloading = bad.
Pay for the singles.
Like many, I did download a pile of singles back in the day, but I am working to buy all of them now in some shape or form. |
