| actually, most people that pirate wont buy cds anyway, before the internet we have recorded tapes out of radio, now we have mp3s, is the globalization of the internet and the record labels whining that makes the problem look bigger than it is. The internet as a concept should be blamed for piracy, not the people |

Intellectual property is nothing but government given monopolies on the use and distribution of non-scarce resources, a simulation of ownership in that which cannot be owned. IP is inherently incompatible with property rights in tangible resources. The allocation of IP-"rights" is totally arbitrary and the use of IP as a consistent principle would equal the total negation of ownership in tangible/scarce resources. So either piracy is ok, or it is ok to rob, steal and murder.
For anyone who understands what ethics and rights actually are it is an easy choice, many others will probably scratch their heads over it. |

Thank you for not reading the thread Ivand and stating something that I already said would be stated by those who support piracy.
| quote: | | A large number of those individuals probably would not rush out and buy the CD if they could not download it, that is true. But a large number also won't buy the CD because they can download it. |
I said this in several different forms many, many times. |

Are you serious? Just because you have the option to do it, doesn't mean you should. You have a free will. If someone choose to take that second path that's hardly the internet's fault is it now?
I buy all my CDs legally. All my friends thinks it's a waste of money, but you have to support the artists in this tiny EDM scene. Unfortunately I'm not the "martyr" I'd like to be when it comes to singles... |

If there was no piracy, I would be a donkey musically, listening to the "good" portuguese PIMBA tracks! :x
(example of a pimba track: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IrrCtKpVavw )
this can seriously disturb you!
P.S.: lol, ok, I wouldn't reach that point...
But if there was no piracy, I wouldn't know half of the dj's that I actually know, or have the opportunity to listen to their sounds... |

of course it is you wouldnt expect to walk into a record store and grab a few tracks then walk out and get away with it. When you download a track you are taking something that isnt yours |
I'm sure this has already been addressed by a couple of other posters, but it bears repeating: the analogy of walking into a store and walking out with a CD without paying for it is inapplicable. When you download music without compensating the artist, you're not taking something away from that artist. Music in electronic form is trivially replicated - such is the nature of the medium.
That said, piracy is definitely not cool. It is impossible to eradicate it (the War on Piracy is similar to the War on Drugs or the War on Terror), but this fact doesn't justify it.
I would much rather directly pay the artist than pay middlemen like the **AA who are desperately hanging on to the remnants of their outdated business model. |

i know i realised after i posted.
Thats a good point why dont artists sell there tracks directly to customers i would much rather pay an artist directly then paying on a site and all my money going to the record label. |

You tell the artists that, okay?
I know that's how you "justify" it, by saying that it's "only code" and that the data isn't tangible like a CD, but this 'medium' (mp3 vs CD) is not as issue -- it's the music.
Let me put it this way: if you walked into Best Buy, unwrapped a CD case, busted out your laptop, made a copy of that CD, put the original back in its case -- shrinkwrapped it back up and got it on the shelf for sale again, that is the SAME DAMN THING as downloading it.
That would be like downloading a PDF file of an entire novel instead of buying it, "Lol, I'm not stealing anything from the writer!!" Are you reading it? Are you listening to that music? Did you write it? Did you create it? Is it yours? If you were the artist, would you like compensation?
Quit defending piracy and theft with stupid justifications. It's wrong. |

Please read my post again. I haven't defended piracy even once. All I did was take issue with the "theft" argument.
I don't advocate or agree with downloading PDF copies of novels or wreaking havoc at your local Best Buy by burning CDs onto your laptop. I agree, it's virtually identical to downloading a ty mp3 from LimeWire. |

Uhh, no - this thread was about pirating music specifically, you were the one that came up with anything software related.
Also, I don't really care about any of your definitions as I was expressing mine. |
Expressing your invented definitions? When it said software it was just an example, it didn't mean it was limited to just software. Also, you should learn how to read because it was never just about pirating music, check back to the beginning and try again or possibly have it read to you.

I suppose there are still a number of people who think, "Well, just because I download the album instead of buy it... doesn't mean it hurts them. I wasn't going to spend that $15 anyway on it, so it doesn't hurt them."
Oh, okay, that makes it alright then. Well, you know what, I'm going to try that elsewhere. I think I'll head to the supermarket and pick up some food and walk out with it, and when they stop me, I'll just tell them they weren't going to get my money anyway, so it's not really hurting them. |
So I download a CD, listen to it and delete it and I'm an evil pirate but I go to a friends house or to HMV and listen to the CD and not buy it and I'm a decent human being? I'm searching for the logic in what you're saying but it isn't coming to me.
By that logic I also shouldn't be allowed to be in the car while a friend has the CD playing since I haven't compensated the artist.
If you want an accurate analogy then me walking into a grocery store and smelling a piece of fruit is like me downloading a CD, if I don't buy it and walk out then that's me not being satisfied with it and not wanting it. The grocery store isn't losing money and if they do it's because I didn't want to buy a bad piece of fruit. |

lol! that pimba track was hot! and the video was brilliant too! :eyespop:
as for my views on piracy:
i don't support the "traditional" piracy at all! ie buying cds replicated by the mafia etc. and i do feel that file sharing shouldn't be linked with piracy even though there are similarities there. i also don't think it's right that people just download everything and don't pay for anything because it's available free. that's just ing wrong IMO.
but on the other hand, before file sharing i had about 20 cds or so, now i have almost 1000. and most of the cds i've bought because of file sharing. i wouldn't have discovered these artists otherwise. i also hate buying music, so i like to preview before i buy and as the cd stores around here sell nothing but crap pretty much the only preview means i have left is downloading the tunes off p2p or samples from websites. some time ago there wasn't much samples available anywhere, now it's a bit better but still not nearly good enough. i've also started buying stuff from beatport/audiojelly/etc. and i hardly download anything off p2p anymore. also when i dj, i NEVER play anything i don't own a legal copy of, even just in my bedroom, because i think it's wrong.
so i think if everyone was like me when it comes to file sharing, it wouldn't be a problem. but most people aren't and that's the reason it is a problem.
