I believe that the benefits of downloading music outweigh the negatives.
I usually have to listen to the stuff first before buying it and kicking myself in the ass cuz it sucks. People also tend to support the artists they love by talking about them in forums like this, word of mouth...etc
It's basically a small price to pay for getting yourself known.
I love PvD and I started off downloading his stuff. Now I've got his latest albums and a Vandit shirt to sport :) |

I know personally I have purchased much more music since I began downloading it, probably due to be exposed to more music, because I wouldn't have heard otherwise.
Like countless others have rehashed, there are positives and negatives, but I think the positives have outweighed the negatives, you don't see record labels going out of business daily, but more and more created every second. |

yes but most people that download dont buy stuff no matter if its good or not. |

and a lot of those people might not buy music in the first place, even if they couldn't download it.

Sometimes it is the only way you can get hold of deleted tracks - I tried for months and years to get hold of kraftwerk - tour de france 12" breakdance mix
no record store could help me out - I didn't have the internet at the time and a good friend down loaded me a copy.
If they have been deleted off the record library what else can you do - I was also looking for jimmy the hoover at the time as well - (now I am showing my age!!) |

I have known a lot of new DJs and producers through music trackers. If I hadnt download mp3s, I wouldnt have half the CDs I have at the moment.
Music sharing is not illegal all over the world. Here in Spain I can share music without breaking any rule, and everything else except copyrighted software.
Downloading music is not the same than stealing, companies doesnt loose money for that. You can download a 1TB music pack, and you wont buy 1TB of music in your whole life!

In related news that may or may not be interesting to people, the Full Bench of the Federal Court (2nd highest court in Aus) found a website and its ISP guilty of copyright infringement by having links to copyrighted material. While it didn't host it itself, by having catalogued links for downloading it was breaching copyrights.
I'd recommend you read the full article cos I haven't explained it particularly well

Downloading music is the same as stealing. Someone makes a music track. The only way you can get this track is through buying it. SOmeone buys it and nows gives you that track for no amount of money. If he didn't pay for it, you wouldn't have it.

I will say it again. If I download a new In State of Trance episode and on this episode there is a new track by DJ Tiesto. I take the ISOT and cut the track out. Now I have the track and now I do not buy this track. Did I just steal Tiesto's new track or did I do nothing wrong? |
