Yes, my definitions. You know, that's the thing when you think for yourself and don't copy someone else's thoughts. You should try that sometime.

Looking up a definition in the dictionary and posting said definition isn't copying someone elses thoughts you ing retard. I don't see the logic in how citing a dictionary entry is copying someone elses thoughts but then again you seem like an idiot so just don't bother trying to explain your logic to me.

Maybe you meant your interpretation of the word, which is something completely different, but then again we've established that you can't read properly already ie. your comment that this thread was specifically about music.

I believe that if you like the music you should support the artist by purchasing the single. However I will freely admit that file sharing is the reason I got into trance and EDM in the first place. I had no idea what it was and if I wasn't able to get a bunch of different songs for free on my home computer I would still probably be listening to the crap that I had access to on the radio.

No I won't, as I am a "ing retard" and therefore my explanations would obviously be so ridiculously retarded you wouldn't understand them. Which has clearly been the case with everything I've said so far.

Victory by semantics. Well done. You'd be a great politician.

Oh, okay, that makes it alright then. Well, you know what, I'm going to try that elsewhere. I think I'll head to the supermarket and pick up some food and walk out with it, and when they stop me, I'll just tell them they weren't going to get my money anyway, so it's not really hurting them.

They'll say to me, "But you're still eating our food."

just make sure they don't catch you next time. that is the difference with downloading music for free, you don't get caught, so you never have to explain yourself. although i understand this comparison, i dont think its the best one.

I forgot where I seen this analogy, I could have sworn it was in Rolling Stone or Blender, but searching their websites I couldn't find it. Someone brought up the point of a free trip to florida. If you polled 100 people and asked if they were going to florida, not many would say that they were, or that they wouldn't pay to go. Now, if you switched the question to "do you want a free trip to florida" a lot of people would want to go. The airlines and hotels and everything were not going to get your money anyways.

I'm actually doing a paper on this now, and I download music, not a gross amount, I'm not one of those people who type in an artists name and just click down the line of all their songs, I do buy a fair share of music (like someone mentioned earlier, i'm materialistic and love to have a hard copy) and I even buy some tracks off beatport, but I think you should be able to download music. (long ass sentence, thats why i have proof readers for my papers) The main problem with downloading music in my eyes is the people who never buy a CD even if they have all the songs from it and love it. or the people who download 50 songs a day. they will use the argument of how the internet helps new artists get discovered as they download everything on the top 40. for every good point I can find, I can also find a decent rebuttal.

maybe they should make a system where u get like 5 free songs a week or something, haha

I thought I should mention that it is entirely legal to download copyrighted music, but it is illegal to share (upload) copyrighted music. I can't say the same thing is true for downloading copyrighted games or movies, since at one point (either you or the person uploading it) cracked the copyright on it via cracking the serial, registration code, macrovision on the DVDs, etc. which is illegal. With mp3s, it's different, and you really cannot get in trouble for downloading music and/or movies, so long as you do not upload it.

However, that doesn't mean any of it is morally right.

I am more against piracy of movies than music, and more against piracy of music than software ;-)

I'm confused, so if i set my upload to 0, and take all songs out of my shared folders, I can download as much as I want legally?

I'm for it. :thepirate

If something can be duplicated at no real cost (or effectively no cost) then exchanging something of tangible value (i.e. money) for it is a dubious proposition.

Umm... okay, let me put it another way -- the RIAA (or MPAA) has no way of tracking who is downloading said songs/music, unless they are uploading it themselves (and therefore sharing it.) If they did that, they would be violating the copyright themselves. Even if they got the studios to upload files, you'd be in full right to download them, because they wouldn't be being illegally shared, since the person sharing them would hold the copyright.

It takes the "it's only illegal if you get caught" to another level.

With software, it's different, because there are clauses in the terms and agreements before installing that you agree to that you will not redistribute, and specifically, that you will honor the copyright of the software (and other things like, that you will only use the software on this system, etc.)

While "downloading" an item isn't technically illegal, if you were raided and your computer was seized, you would be in a lot of trouble for copyright infrigement on any software that you downloaded and cracked (whether you did it or not.)

Let's say you download a full game, but you need a serial key to play it. You haven't broken any laws downloading it. But once you obtain a serial key that you did not pay for, you are "cracking" the software (especially since most serial keys are just duplications based on your system's configuration, which is why serial & key generators exist, they look at your system to figure out the serial key. Windows XP uses this.)

It was a big miscommunication on the media's part during the RIAA raids, because they made it sound like they were looking at what people were downloading and then targetting them with subpoenas. Nope, that's not even possible, since that would be a huge privacy breach (you may think that the subpoena covers this, but it's entirely different.)

What the RIAA does is goes on to a file-sharing network, downloads all the music they can from someone uploading it, then recording that data transfer and IPs associated with it. Then they send a subpoena to your ISP to obtain legal information needed (your name, address, basic contact information, and data records.)

Then they nail you for sharing music with them. The RIAA has to first download it from you, otherwise, they might try to get you for uploading a file that isn't even real. IE, a file labeled as one thing that isn't. Uh, a good example would be a song title that has the same name as a popular one, but is your own song or something, from your own band. They can't just look at the filename and be like, "Oh, that's Aerosmith's song," when it's really your garage band's song.

<Uberkommando> i keep all my songs in "E:ClearlyNotPiratedMedia"
<Uberkommando> that should keep the RIAA off my trail for a while
