How bad is Tiesto's Mixing... really??? (live)

So Tiesto gets a lot of flack for being in the Top 3 DJMag100 list for the last several years, because his productions have been sub-par and his DJ'ing skills lacking.

I might be in the minority here, but I do like ISOS, and his tracks aren't terrible (tho I must scratch my head as to why after all these years he still doesn't know how to use a production studio).

Anyways, what exactly about his live DJ'ing makes him not so good? Is his beatmatching off? Way off? Does he not phrase match? I mean... there is only so many things a DJ can do wrong from a technical standpoint. Personally I think his song selection is alright.

Are we always supposed to expect the top 10 DJ's to have perfect beatmatching everytime? Surely even Armin slips up sometimes??? I have heard stories of Christopher Lawrence trainwrecking and yet he is in the Top 10 this year...

It really isn't that bad, people just still think the 5-year-old joke gets better by repeating it over and over.

Why not download a current live set and judge for yourself?

If there is one thing I can really point out regarding lack of quality it would have to be the phrasing of the tracks. Other than that it isn't nearly as bad as some people like to make it out to be.

wait is it phrasing? i always thought it was phasing, either one makes sense to me though
julien2
phrasing, as in a musical phrase

[thread]

the djing itself is not that bad, tiesto is not the strongest guy in term of technique, but the fact is he plays trance.

A trance DJ will never obtain the same skills as a techno or house DJ simply because of the way you get the mix, ie the melody is already constructed within the track itself.

Plus, in over 5 years, Tiesto hasn't changed a bit, lack of evolution = sucks.

Phasing probably has something to do with superimposed harmonic motion. But not really anything to do with being a DJ.

I'm not sure what you mean by melody constructed within the track... I've spun house and have found it much easier than trance.

Just like any DJ, he gets lazy and he isn't 100% right on all of the time. But from the times i've seen him, and hearing his livesets and owning all of his mixed CDs (yeah but I am not a Tiestowhore, I just like the music he plays, I don't pay attention the mixing that much, except the cringe inducing mixing on ISOS 4) he really isn't all that bad. I mean he's no Armin, but he's competent enough. I mean he isn't that great at harmonic mixing, and some of his phrasing can be off, but he's more about playing tracks he likes out..so in a way he is a glorified jukebox, but he's not as bad as say I am..at mixing haha. As far as trance DJs, he's better than George Acosta or ATB at mixing and Oakenfold's new trail of trainwrecks.

Yea, I definately noticed that... sometimes he'll play two vocals that have no business overlapping and I have to take the headphones off until the madness ends.

Yeah I don't think he keys his tracks or listens/studies some of the tracks enough to understand their structure. That is a turn off, but he can beatmatch competently, if only he would just beatmatch, and not worry about trying to harmonically mix (if he is even trying to do that).

He's OK. Nothing special but better than a lot of DJs I've seen out.
