ive been looking into torq and serato to see which would be better for me since im planning to get rid of my cd decks in order to keep the whole vinyl thing going since i prefer it to cd's...but i was just wondering if anybody knows whether or not either program can be run with ableton. i heard torq is synchronizable with ableton but i have also heard that you need a monster computer and there are issues running both programs at the same time...i figure somebody on TA would know that answer for sure.
i could possibly do without ableton...since i spin dnb mostly but after hearing dnb sets created with ableton...it doesnt have the same charm as with trance sets...but when spinning trance i'd still like to have that "creativity" as typical with ableton trance sets. so the question goes back to serato or torq....:whip:
can you use a midi controller with serato in order to trigger loops, samples, fx, etc...like torq?
any help would be greatly appriciated! :toocool: |

hope i can answer clearly:
basically serato is not midi controllable nor rewire compatible (as Torq indeed is). yes you need a decent machine (even a low end macbook or possibly g4 would be able to handle fine) to take on torq + ableton or serato + ableton at the same time. |

If you want solid vinyl emulation and just that pick up Serato. If you want to mess with Ableton too I'd suggest Torq.
Personally If I were going to use Ableton in a live setting (I currently only use it as a sequencer for studio work only) well I'd use Ableton and Ableton only. Why do you need fake time code records when you have Ableton already. I think its just for show. |

| a lot of people including myself are having trouble letting go of CDJ's or vinyl and moving on to exclusively ableton so torq and serato is a good option for the "digital era" dj's. to be completely honest i feel like there should be a better way to integrate ableton and CDJ's but for now rewiring torq or doing hybrid mixing back and forth between cdj's and ableton will get the job done. in the end the audience only cares about what comes out of the speakers but the dj will always have his preference for certain tools. so i guess its about balancing redundancy and creativity with all this new technology! |

| I know, I've been using Serato for about a year now mostly for gigs and I'm starting to think the spinning records are all for show. |

if dnb tracks were more readily available for dl...i probably would just go all out ableton...but dnb seems like its one of the few genres that are still a heavily vinyl based medium.
i personally have no desire to play out in front of a crowd...im happy having this as a hobby and nothing more...but playing the same record, beatmatching, etc does tend to get a little boring. whenever i spin i always think "oh that one vocal from that one track would be perfect with this song...etc..."
i assumed that torq might best fit what im looking for instead of straight vinyl emulation...and it's probably the best bet too.
has anybody had issues getting torq as of late? i heard that a lot of places are sold out and aren't getting any shipments anytime soon. |

i run both serato and ableton 5 simultaneously on my 1.67 ghz G4 and its stable. i start running out of processor overhead when i load up lots of plug-ins and such.
I'm sticking with serato untill they change their interface and i have to buy a new setup. i'm hoping they will integrate midi control for their cue buttons and looping in one of their upcoming software upgrades.
i havent used torque, but serato is very solid and very reliable. its a great tool to have IMO. |

torq is pretty hard to get lately its backordered everywhere so good luck getting it! it sounds like youd benefit from it. the thing is though, like vero said ssl is very stable and reliable and is considered the "tried and true" industry time-code control interface. although torq is great and im even considering getting it because of rewire and midi capabilities, its still quite buggy right now so i'd wait if i were you. |

| true about ssl being tried and true...the one reason i wouldve gone with it...im probably gonna wait a while to save up the $$$ for torq and a new computer dedicated to just music stuff and hopefully by then torq will have all its bugs out and be just as good as ssl...if not, and im over the loops, samples, etc...ssl here i come! :haha: |

What are these bugs with Torq that you speak of? I've had it for a few days now, but I haven't had any problems whatsoever. The only thing that ever comes up is that it gets screwy if you switch from relative to absolute mode with the needle down, but that's not really a bug so much as a fact of life (M-Audio even mentions it in the manual). It's irrelevant anyways, because I just use absolute mode. I guess I'll get a real test of it tonite, as I'm playing a gig with it in about an hour and a half.
Personally, I love the program to death already. I haven't even messed around with the really cool stuff -effects, VSTs, rewire capability - but it's still way better than having a strictly vinyl setup. Hopefully I'll be getting a Trigger Finger and/or DJM800 in the near future. Then I can really get crazy with . I get giddy just thinking about the possibilities that Torq offers. |

| if you go to the torq dj forums theres plenty of people with plenty of bugs. im not saying dont get it, in fact i actually plan on getting it but a lot of the issues that some people have are not addressed yet. note that you havent tried out the vst implementation and whatnot so you might want to do all that before your gig just to make sure. i think the majority of the problems people have been having are software based as opposed to the interface itself. crashes, stuff like that. |

| Tonite the system performed flawlessly. Didn't do much with effects though, and certainly didn't use any VSTs, so yeah maybe that'll come up in the future. Seriously, though, it's a solid investment. |
