I'm dropping out of art school

Not that I’ve even BEEN to my friggin art school in like 2 semesters because I can’t afford it, but whatever. I’m abandoning my dreams of becoming anything big in “the arts” industry, as I feel it’s not attainable. i've been slowly trying to pursue a degree in advertising from the very expensive art institute (60 g’s for a BS degree that is not even nationally accredited) with the hopes of working for a magazine some day or being some art director for a big advertising firm, but i just dont think i have it in me. i love fashion, and photography and screenplay writing, and fancy parties, but at the same time, i think inside, i'm more of a jeans and flip flops girl...too down-to-earth for that artsy, phony bull 24-7.
i've been a legal secretary for a long time now, and i'm just more familiar with the legal field and i've realized that it's more important to me to just have a really high paying, respectable career that gives me good benefits and vacation time and a fat bonus at the end of each year. so why settle for just the secretary part? i'd rather be the boss.
i’m not saying law school is going to be a walk in the park, but I have a much harder time putting creativity to work, than I do with just studying a bunch of that I will later on need to apply. I’m better at just studying material and applying it, and that’s pretty much what law school is. So with some time, and a lot of student loan money, I will eventually be an attorney. Probably not until I’m around 30 or 31, but I don’t care. That’s still young and I will probably get a job right away making 80k at a firm and I can see myself earning a partnership or even starting my own firm and easily be in the 6 figure range by the time I’m 35, which is fine by me. I already have a head start with the legal secretary stuff. And I’m probably only a semester away from an associates degree, so I think that I’ll be able to apply to a university by next fall. I have my heart set on UM for some reason. I think I’m supposed to go there. I can’t explain it, but GO CANES!
I can save all my artsy stuff as hobbies. I love to cook, I love photography…I can always do that on the side and I’m perfectly ok with this.
COR ADD VERSION:
So...at the age of 25, I finally know what I'm going to do with my life, and for the first time, I actually set a career goal for myself that I don't secretly doubt I will achieve.
Besides, I'm mentally unstable, I'm a bitch, I'm an instigator, I love being right, and I look killer in work suits with stiletto heels...I'd be the perfect attorney.
Wish me luck!!!!!
Sincerely,
Slylee, Esquire

I'm not sure how you want to take any of this but I felt I can contribute to your thoughts and current situation.
First the Art Director position,
Most of the success in the art field has to do with being familiar with the current design applications, those are the TOOLS you need to learn provided that you have a crisp sense of style, creativity, and the time to put into it. I'm sure everyone has some creative side to them, some more than others, but most of the pitfalls in the current art/advertising realm these days are in peoples inability to familiarize themselves with the applications to create the artwork. I think you have a great creative side to you from what i've seen in your photo work, not the fact that the photographer took the pictures but photogenically ideal with a sense of style.
A really good friend of mine (also DJ Tek's GF - Babytek), works for a European owned Advertising agency. I'm totally envious of her work environment, the days she gets off, but understand the amounts of pressure she goes through at work. I agree that it's not a walk in the park career, but the flipside to it is if you know the applications, have a sense of style, and are well organized you can succeed in that field.
As for law, my only experience with this is the current girl that i've been seeing (or not seeing) is in law school. i don't see her because she's locked up in school, literally, since law school is not about succeeding to a standard but competing in a group environment. She's probably one of the most intuitive persons I know with a degree as a Mechanical Engineer (yea I know, she's a girl too!) and worked for Boeing prior to her moving into the Law Field. I've heard from her that she's close to quitting the law school effort but hasn't decided on where else to focus her efforts.
Anyways, from the above, whatever you can take away from it, i wish you make the best decision. |

kidnyce, that's exactly my problem. bringing my ideas to life and being up to par w/ the technology...i just dont see myself as that tech/art saavy person, despite all my ideas. i'm just keeping it real and realizing what i'm capabale of, or what i'm not willing to be capable of, to be honest. i know i'll always envy chicks like that one you just described, but i just needed to be honest with myself for once, and realize i'm not that chick, even though it's a dream. i need to stick to what i know if i want to make money and be successful, then i need to go with what i know and what i'll be good at.
thanks for all the good wishes everyone:) |

sorry for sounding bitter, im not too interested.
but while listening to the Clipse - Trill i just think that you need to apply yourself like nobodys ing business. just working at a law firm isnt enough.
if the firm is any good your bosses did redic work. this isnt simple get FAFSA scholarship info, rec's, and start working your .
ima bit outta school and realize its not ing gift baskets and free help, but if you do whatever you do well, it does get recognized| |

nope. baby steps, lol. i think finishing my bachelors is my first step. i should probably switch to pre-law as soon as i get into a university from community college. i'm not going to waste my time with a political science or criminology undergrad degree because i think once i go to law school, i'll be missing credits that i'll need and will have to take them while i'm in law school. i'd rather go to law school with every undergrad credit i need, so i dont waste any more time than i already have with my career choice.
i think i'll only need to go to community college for one semester, depending on how many of my credits i can transfer from my art school, but since it's an art school and not nationally accredited, i might have to take some over. community college is dirt cheap and there is one right downtown near my work that i can go to at night. hopefully i can bet on being at a 4 year univ. by next fall. |
