I have heard the term "overproduction" thrown around a bit, but I'm not sure what people mean by it.
What are the indications of overproduction? What are some examples of tracks that you think are "overproduced?" |

Overly high supply of new music (especially within one genre). Inflation/Sean Tyas.

Too much processing/effects/showing off production skills in one track, the anti-"less is more". Some would say the vocals in BT - Somnambulist are a case of overproduction. |

i find this track overproduced:
Depeche Mode - Precious (Sasha's Gargantuam Vocal Mix) |

BT was probably the trend-setter for obsessive production in trance, and he's often stepped a fine line between his tracks sounding incredible and simply sounding over-cooked. I'm a huge BT fan but I have to say he's probably to blame for all this super-shiny hollow trance we hear today. |

I'm not sure I know what you mean but one example I can think of straight away is 'Factoria - A Legend's Legacy' - there's just too much going on.
That's perhaps more an abundance of layers though rather than being technically over-produced... |

| It's what minimalists/glitch/indie-heads use to justify the fact that their music is e made in 5 seconds by people with no concept of what an equalizer or a compressor are. :haha: |

Not really.
If you're going to place blame, I would place it on the fact that production software is now "free" and all available for use on a single home PC, hence instant canned recording studio.
Also, all of us have grown up in a world where the major pop/rock/hiphop/etc record studios are shoving cheap manufactured crap down our throats to get our disposable teenage incomes. For this reason, I think a lot of us go into electronica with the same mindset and habits that we formed with 3 minute pop music. That is to say, at first we focus on one single subset or sub-subset of the electronica genre, like listening to only prog til it's beaten into the ground, when there are actually so many amazing genres within the larger electronica category, all with different things to offer the listener. |

it isn't a term i like to use, personally. but then that's just taste.. i like things to be perfectly produced. most of the time i can completely alienate myself from the 'musical' side of music in order to appreciate the 'sound' side alone; a perfectly crafted mixdown to me is often more important than hearing something catchy or innovative, and trying to follow lots of well-balanced elements at the same time can sometimes have a greater theraputic effect than say, a decent melody or theme
thought i'd put my opinion out since i normally only hear from people who think the opposite! |

| I usually associate overproduction with a muddiness of sound created by an overabundance of different frequencies at the same time, or a progression or parts that are too melodramatic |
