I just love people that throw out random numbers to back up their arguments. It makes their initial thoughts that much less credible. If you use numbers, back them up with REPUTIBLE sources and i don't mean jo blows web site for numbers.

People who cry out against the death penalty always use the argument that look at the crime rate and how it is increasing since we use it. What they fail to mention is the exponential increase in population and then degredation that is happening in our society. I think capital punishment is keeping the rate down but i won't throw out numbers to prove my statemnet because they don't exist and they aren't possible.

This doesn't mean i codone the killing of this girl, in fact i think it is very wrong. The punishment is way to harsh for the crime. She should have known the laws in that country and abide by them. But in the US, we put to death mass murder's and rapists and only after they go through a appeal system that last over 20 years in some cases.

So Thor the next time you decide to spam your Liberal views on our country, back your stuff up and don't say lies to support your argument.

OK, since you like to see the facts:

DNA Tests Free Inmates

January 19, 2000 -- More Death Row Inmates Freed than Executed in Illinois

Some more fun statistics from the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union)

"Whether you support or oppose capital punishment, there is mounting evidence that the system is broken. A review of death penalty judgments over a 23-year period found a national error rate of 68 %. In a matter of life and death, we are getting it wrong more than 2 out of every 3 times. We need a moratorium on executions to give us time to figure out why the system is not working."

Who cares if the state kills innocents, as long as we kill bad people right?

Here's some more fun statistics... Showing how racist and unfair the death penatly really is:

"Approximately 35% of those executed since 1976 have been black, even though blacks constitute only 12% of the population. The odds of receiving a death sentence are nearly four times higher if the defendant is black than if he or she is white."

"Current death row populations show the racially discriminatory impact of death penalty sentencing. The following states, in particular, illustrate the problem. As of the Spring of 2000, the percentages of black people on death row were as follows:

Alabama:46% black
California:36% black
Florida:36% black
Illinois: 63% black

Maryland:72% black
Pennsylvania:63% black
Texas:41% black
Virginia:39% black

"A defendant's likelihood of receiving the death penalty correlates with the victim's race.

Of people currently on death row, 82% were convicted in cases involving white victims."

"Of those sentenced to death for crimes committed as juveniles, two-thirds are people of color.

Additionally, two-thirds of the victims of juvenile offenders on death row are white. The typical juvenile offender on death row is a 17-year-old African American or Latino male whose victim is a white adult."

There you go, some facts to back up my views, maybe you should do some reading of your own to see what a joke the death penalty truly is instead of spouting your views without knowing the full facts.

Good day sir :D
Thor
Here's some facts on how little deterrence the death penalty truly has... Read em :)

Death Penalty info

Even police chiefs feel its not a big deterrence..

Well lets see, she had over 500g of ganja which is the minimum legal limit for the death sentence. Also she was distributing in a country known for very strict laws, knowing very well that you can get strapped and lashed for spitting gum on the ground. Singapore has a very effective law.

She is the weakest link. Goodbye

Ok, I'm a little slow...what coutry is this happening in????? :conf:

haha, you are using a different set of standards for her. which isnt fair on your part. because she chose to do what she did, then by the laws, government has the right to choose what to do with her. like in hte usa, lets say you sell weed and then go to jail for it. can you say the government shouldnt be able to choose to put you in jail. no you cant, because the laws, no matter what, need to be followed, and whoever breaks them, and is caught, should and will suffer the consiquences no matter what they are

No, there's do different set of standards. The government shouldn't have the authority to kill a person. Killing a person and putting them in jail are very very very different matters.

the principles applied by Singapore to drug dealers and the United States to murderers are EXACTLY the same.

Capital Punishment is just what society calls Human Sacrifice nowadays. When societies are threatened with social disintergration or percieved social disintergration they lash at at people who mainstream society doesnt care about. These days those people are called criminals. In other times they were prisoners of war, religious deviants, witches, whatever.

Sacrificial lambs.

Sacrificing prisoners of war at the altar of an aztec god, burning heretics at the stake, sending some black guy to the electric chair. Its the same thing. Elaborate ritual,(an invocation to god, a final meal) followed by formalized murder.

Make no mistake about it Capital Punishment has very, very strong religious overtones. I think it would be safe to say that the more fanatical a society is in its religious beliefs and the more the ruling elite fear losing control the more likely it is to actively and vigorously pursue capital punishment as a means of control.

Religion has long been understood as a method of social control. I apply religion in a very broad context to include ideological religions such as Communism and Fascism.

Whether it be electrocution for alleged murderers in America, stoning for adulterers in Nigeria, hanging for drug dealing in South-East Asia. They are all the same thing. Crimes committed by the society against its people. Extreme punishments dont stop the crimes being committed.

To say that someone shouldnt have committed the crime in the first is to miss the point entirely. No government, no religion, no god, no society can take away a persons right to live. To take away that right is called Murder. Whether I do it to the guy next door, or the government does it to me, Murder is Murder.

Thor, if you look to my previous post i asked for REPUTIBLE sources. I asked if there was a scientific study to back up your arbitrary number of more than fifty death row inmates being released. You answered with sites from the ACLU and a private site. These are not reputible sources and where i go to school if i quoted them as sources i would get a big fat F. The American Civil Liberties Union is special interest group that is almost on the fringe of fanaticism. These are the same people that protest beauty pagents because they degrade woman and at the same time fight any law trying to curb the ability for minors to view internet porn. If you look, the numbers come from a poll they themselves did. That's akin to asking Larry Flint if Porn should remain a legal business. Of course they are going to come up with stats to support their cause. As for the other site, for all we know this organization thinks that if we don't have the death penalty repealed by the time Hale-Bopp comes back around, we should all drink poisen and cover our heads with hankies and let it take us to Uranus. I just finished a Writing and Research class spring semester last year and the prof told us if we turn anything in with a web site ending in .com, the best we could get was a D.

Here is a Michigan State University site with stats about the deterrence of the death penalty

In 1965, according to a Harris pol, 38 percent of U.S. poll respondents believed in the death penalty; 47 percent opposed it. In 1997, 75 percent said they believed in the death penalty and only 22 percent opposed it. A 1996 poll conducted by Sam Houston State University found that 73.4 percent of respondents nationwide favored the death penalty for persons convicted of murder, but of those, 20.1 percent no longer favored the death penalty if convicted murderers were given a "true" life sentence that is, sentenced to life imprisonment without possiblity of parole.

This comes from the University of Alaska Anchorage website.
Heres the site

Even after you take away the 20.1 percent from the 73.4 percent, it is still a majority.

The point is, we could argue this to death and come up with credible sites to back our stuff up. People have been debating this for a long time and will for long time. We will never agree and i think we can agree to disagree. I was just wanted to call you on saying numbers that may or may not exist without proof.

Good day to you, sir
