yes, its a high ammount, but why kill somebody over it?

but why deal it?

singapore has low crime rates for a reason

Now, regardless of the girl being stupid, irresponsible and short sighted, I must say that the death penalty for such a thing is really absurd. I'm glad that the issue has been reviewed, and that she will only get a prison sentence because she sure does deserve it, although those sentences over there are quite harsh as well. Now, about the whole capital punishment issue, I'd be more inclined to send criminals to do forced labor for life. But on some especially cruel occasions, and only when the subject's guilt has been 100% confirmed, I believe capital punishment should be an option.

nah, the woman knew the ing rules and laws when she went to singapore. Singapore and Malaysia are very, very strict places in terms of drugs but then again, they are not the only countries with death sentences for drugs. If she had wanted to smoke up, she should have done it in Germany because the laws are the laws in that country and it is well known and you don't around with drugs in those countries, they will kick your ass. Most of their drug laws are to deter smugglers and dealers from dealing, not the recreational user but you people who smoke up are offended because you think that it is a harmless drug but in certain parts of the world they don't think that way.

She's stupid, there's no denying that. That doesn't negate the fact that it's an unjust law.

But how many people has it saved from death by putting the monsters out of their ing misery?

That sort of utilitarian logic is good in economics but hard to put into practice in a practical legal context. Are you suggesting it's worth losing a few innocent lives to save a few innocent lives? Are we going to hire actuaries to figure out the probability tables and determine the annual "capital punishment quota" so that expected number of innocent lives saved = expected number of innocent lives lost?
I think that reasoning misses the point that in a modern society the needless taking of innocent lives by the government is inexcusable.

So you telling me that you rather have psychopaths (who cannot feel sympathy or regret for their actions) should get 25 to life with the possibly of parole and be able to walk the streets even thought, NO AMOUNT OF REHAB can fix these monsters. Would you want richard ramirez walking the streets around your family? the answer is obviously no and people like him deserve to be put out of their ing misery and be executed.

You're comparing a sentence imposed with the primary purpose of protection to a sentence imposed with the primary purpose of rehabilitation. As such its an unfair comparison. Just because a state doesn't choose to kill an offender, doesn't mean they have to let him go or give him a light sentence. Life imprisonment without parole is an adequate alternative.

The death penalty needs to be in force for certain crimes

Why? WHy not just do what you suggest below?

quote:
certain people should just get life in prison or do what they do here, slap the dangerous offender status on them and they can never get out and the gov't can hold certain people so dangerous to society in prison forever to protect society. Certain people need the death penalty and we should have not taken it out (still exists in Canada for treason....tho I doubt someone would be tried for it)....so you mean to tell someone who lives in Canada that someone like Paul Bernardo should be allowed to walk the streets of any Canadian city again?.....think not....

Again your argument structure suggests that "if you don't kill 'em you gotta let 'em go"

quote:
anyway...all you people with the whole "smoke weed, it's ok" fail to also realize that it is a muslim nation under islamic law which last I checked = death sentence for drugs.

Singapore is a secular state with a secular legal system... SOme would say it's fiercely secular: In Singapore girls aren't allowed to go to school wearing Muslim headscarves.
Perhaps you have it confused with Malaysia, which is a Muslim state and has Muslim legal structures in place in some areas of law (eg. family law). Besides the death penalty is also in place for drug trafficking in Thailand and Vietnam - both of which have very few Muslim citizens.

Oh come on people! These stupid terrorist waster drug users DESERVE to die. I mean, for all we know, she might have went out dealing this poison to innocent children, who then get addicted and start taking HEROIN AND CRACK and then go out murdering people and robbing the corpses to pay for this evil stuff!!!!11 And the small minority who wont go on to heroin will turn gay and grow breasts and if theyre a girl they will get a moustach and a penis and go crazy. Dont u know thats what cannabis does???
And we all know shes going to go and give her profits to al qaeda and saddam etc.
The only way we can stop this is by killing ALL those drug takers and dealers! THEYRE EVIL!!!!11!!

If that is the case, most empirical studies seem to suggest that it is not working (or at least not any better than life imprisonment).

if your guilty of a crime u should be punished either by death or life imprisionment.

The latter would seem to be the better alternative, given the reasons above and in Thor's posts

the law is the law, no matter how unjust it is.

And on top of that if you're not home, and you only yourself to cry cause you get busted and get in serious trouble then I say you deserve a serious beating just for being stupid.

This girl obviously wasn't just toking up, and the law is strict on the matter, not that I find it right that she should have to die for this, but it's local regulation and none, ESPECIALLY an outsider can allow themselves to comment on it if they are at fault.

Go and enter a country with such regulations, they let you know right when you get out of the airplane that it's illegal to do drugs + dealing and if caught you might face up to the death penalty.

Just wanting her release on the grounds of ones crime being considered permisable in ones country does not make it permisable in another. Go out of your home country, and live by what you're being told, don't expect a treatment any different because of your nationality, the nature of the crime, or whatever idealogy you might boast.

Law is Law, on paper, and in the actions it can take against you.

Get with the act, law is the law no matter where you go. No matter how hard it is.

I agree, but I see it as the duty of outsiders to critique, comment upon or even protest laws that breach fundamental human rights. Especially when these laws are invoked to punish your countrymen.

I don't believe she should get the death penalty for what she did, but the neglegence alone stupifys me. A very long prison term seems quite just to me, but she should have known it could happen if she did this dealing in singapore (so obvious it was dealing) and she shall now pay the consequences.

does any1 have a link to a news story about this?

my 2 cents...

life inprisonment IMO is by far worse than death. so why kill anyone? if the people who support the death penalty really wanted to punish the accused they would want them to suffer. they get like 10 years while they are appealing and then death. wouldnt it be a greater punishment to live in captivaty for 30 or 40 or 60 years? this just makes me think that people who are pro-death are just out to kill ppl.

Well, I guess it was ok then in your opinion for the talibans to make females wear burkas and to forbid them basic human rights like education or health care? I mean, the law is the law, right? Those women could have defected to the Northern Alliance anytime, couldn't they? Who are we westerners to judge local traditions? Things like female circumcisions or cutting of someone's hand for stealing a few coins should be looked upon from a local perspective and you'll then see they're really not so bad. They're only there to keep the stability in the society and to prevent it falling apart.

it's funny cuz the death penalty is justified in the US by the bible "an eye for an eye" (altho they tend not to kill ppl for working the sabbath like the bible tells them, weird how it is selective punishment) but how do you justify killing someone for trafficing? lol an eye for a pound of grass? an eye for a plant? an eye for not being morally strong? i want to pee on those idiots. i want to pee right in their eye!

furthermore, what happens when you deal 1.5 lbs of coke? do you get like 4 death penalties? i cant believe there is no distinction between pot and heroin. i mean i know theres a difference....isnt there?
