DJing is all about drama. What camsr was trying to say I believe was that you strip the dramatic power from an epic track if that's all you play.
I know people, mostly who listen to this sort of trance, who have two categories of music, "choon" and "filler". They consider a good set to be a collection of "choons" and "filler" to be boring and lazy.
Sad way of looking at a DJ set to me.... these are the kind of people that also must be terrible in the sack |

haha sort of
you know there is a proper way to build anticipation where a strong track makes an intense impact on the crowd....it's tantric
a good set is a ritual |

EXACTLY. You must be my brother from another mother, man! :D Epic trance is supposed to be dramatic. What do you get when you listen to an older Tiesto set? Bipolar disorder. A two hour case of Bipolar disorder. God damn I hate epic trance SO MUCH because of him. |

Fact is if you listen to a tiesto set from the past 18 months, you'll find that he plays next to no epic trance. His sets encompass a few genres and are no where near as trancey as say an armin set. |

Thing is, at some events and club nights, the DJs only have maybe an hour to an hour and a half each. The same with some of their radio shows. So to really build a set, well that works in some instances, but sometimes they are just there to play popular tracks, with hardly any filler. Progressive DJs can get away with and should...build a set, while more full on trance DJs are just there to make people dance and play tracks the crowd likes.
Doing a little bit of both is fine, but a lot of DJs who have a warm up DJ, well they have a tendency to start playing full on. It would be kind of weird to have a warm up DJ playing laid back stuff and then reach a peak, only to be brought back down again by the opening DJ playing some slower, proggy tune. It might work in some instances, but most club nights...that what seems to happen...the opener continues the story rather than start a next book.
Some DJs and some club nights and on some CDs, the people want to be taken on a journey, want a variety of tracks and really hear a set that builds. Other times, people just want to listen to tunes and dance, they aren't really paying attention to how the DJ is playing it, just as long as they are playing what they like. |

some good points here.. whilst i agree with camsr/nefardec that emphasis can be taken away from epic trance if there's too much of it, in the context of a clubnight there aren't always such rigid guidelines... ideally the djs should work together to create an overall flow, rather than concentrate purely on their own sets
i'd say a peak-hour dj can get away with playing a whole set full of anthems, providing the guys before him provide a solid build-up & the guys after him take things in a new direction. or say it's the last hour of the night & people are getting weary.. it's generally nice to hear a foray of big tunes to end things on a high note. so yeah both have their place |
