Why does this even matter?

Who cares what anyone hated in 1999?

Well, maybe you think "why does it even matter" every time you open a thread, here.

I don't.

I just don't see how this is in any way meaningful or relevant or of any import.

Usually when I read threads it's easy to figure out why they were started.

This one just seems like it was started cuz he couldn't think of anything better and it's like who cares what anyone of us liked 8 years ago; better would be don't bother creating a new thread.

But, for all we know, he's writing a paper for some History Class about what people disliked in 1999....

So I asked.

Aqua - Barbie girl.
Oddly enough they made a rather nice tune for the "Sliding doors" soundtrack that was completely different from anything else they did.. Can't remember the name though...

Being a trancer from back then, I can tell you that hater-aide had a different flavor then. It wasn't a matter of numbers, because for those who were at Together As One in LA on NYE 1999 can attest that there were plenty of us. I think certain tracks weren't hated on because of how they sounded, but more because they were readily available and every dj you heard was playing them.

It wasn't uncommon in one night in 1999 for you to hear different versions of The Launch, Better of Alone, 9pm, or Meet Her at the Love Parade. It was also this time when dj's like Sasha, Oakenfold, and PvD were starting hit big. During this period the idea of being a dj became reality for alot of partykids. These newbie dj's would want to emulate thier idols tracklists (because the dancers loved it) and thus these tracks started to get played out.

Of course, there was a bit of backlash for groups like Vengaboys and such but it was mostly because they created pop music from an EDM template. This is nothing that hasn't been happening for years now (ie: Aqua, The Real McCoy, Ace of Base). So the "hate" of certain music was just different then. It wasn't about hating the music because it didn't sound "good", it was more because it was being played out everywhere and thus getting boring to hear.

Among trance "elitists" back in the late 90's, it was considered cool to hate on the likes of Sash!, DJ Suicksilver etc. when in actual fact their music was technically no worse than a lot of the schlocky anthem tracks they loved so much.

Alice Deejay and ATB also, although that was really towards the end of 1999 and into 2000 when those names became favourites for bashing. The X Cabs Remix of ATB - Don't Stop was the one that charted here in the UK, and the best known remixes of "9PM" were by Signum and Matt Darey which eclipsed the original in terms of production values. It was only really after the horrible "Killer" and the "Movin Melodies" album that people got to hear the true ATB.

With Alice Deejay much of it came with "Back In My Life". I recently heard it on a pop video channel and it was even worse than I remembered. The voice was just terrible, very thick accent. Productionwise it's a lot better than stuff like Cascada today, but vocally worse and not any more listenable.

This is from my memories on newsgroups and my trance-listening contacts I had online in the late 90's.

Towards the end of 2000 after the commercial success of "Sandstorm" and the follow up which followed the same pattern called "Feel The Beats", Darude became a dirty word (especially on these forums).

You're wrong on all accounts... :p

I don't start many threads and am genuinely curious how about people's attitude towards dance music has changes since 99/00 etc. Those were the "Golden" years we're all told.... Just interesting to compare as in many ways '06 was absolutely insane, so is it all just nostalgia or has the edm scene become extremely jaded/nostalgic?
