Like people mentioned commercial dance music, I also hated Speed Garage with a passion and a lot of people I knew hated it too.

preach it, brother. there were also urban soundtracks, 34 from 1999 through 2002, but i don't think they were as good as the essentials.

nobody mention scooter yet? man, it's so weird to hear these "noobs" ask about 1999. i missed '99 but 2000-2003 were great for EDM too.

Based on that, I pity the current generation who will consider Sean Tyas as best thing since sliced bread in 2015 when they reminisce the 'good old days'

I agree.

The most interesting point made so far is that the hate wasn't around then. And I agree. I just ignored the commercial stuff but I can't do that these days. When my girlfriend plays like DJ Sammy etc or drags me into some awful bar / club that plays commercial pop trance / dance I get really worked up about it, and it ususally leads to an argument.

Dont know why we've all become such arseholes - me included.

it's probably already been put forward in this thread, but it was around back then.. it's just a case of musical generations. most people on here were relatively new or atleast newer to the edm scene back then and hadn't had time to build up refined taste or cynicism. any 'hate' arose from the previous generation who were at their prime in the early-mid nineties, but they were pretty outnumbered & outspoken at the time. now the same thing is happening, there just seems to be more of it because the older generation have more means through which to moan (ie, on the internet)

Darude anyone?
paranoik0
wasn't Darude's big break in 2000 or 2001 with Sandstorm?

Haydn
in 99 i disliked Vengaboys, but I like them now ;)

BTW, IMO this is a valid topic - it is interesting to see how peoples musical tastes change over time and how different types of music age better thna others.
