wow I'm actually quite surprised many of you are gushing about this movie. I'm not going to say it was terrible, but I think it was pretty uninspiring.
The action is good sure, but it's incredibly confusing and the transformer designs are too busy. There were many scenes where I could just not tell, for the life of me, what was going on. I do, however, fully expect it to win or be nominated for a SFX Oscar. The effects are great but the way Michael Bay chose to shoot them oftne produces a confusing scene. Does anybody ever just let the camera SIT STILL anymore?
There are so many cliches and stereotypes in the movie too. Shia Lebouf is a good actor and he is funny at times, but the Taco Bell dog pissing on Optimus Prime's leg to which responds, "My bad"? Bernie Mac's elderly mother character flipping him the bird? If you like that kind of comedy, it might be mildly amusing on first viewing but I don't think this movie will make a lasting impression on most people.
It's riddled with horrible character development on both the humans and the Transformers and there is just way too much comedy. Starscream has one line, Ironhide has maybe 5 lines, Megatron has about 3 or 4 lines. Optimus Prime talks a lot and sounded great but his dialogue was again, poor. The movie could have taken itself at least HALF seriously but I guess the studio was more interested in promoting new American military equipment or getting the tie ins on screen enough (did anybody understand why the Mountain Dew pop machine turned into a transformer?)
Some people just want a big dumb action movie with exploding all over the place with bad one liners that get tired after one viewing. That's fine. Others, like me, would prefer more crafty humour, character development and coherent action scenes (like in the old Stars Wars, Indiana Jones, first Matrix, etc). This new TF is definitely option A and yet another example of how current Hollywood movies largely fail to capture my imagination these days. I was kinda hoping they'd treat my favourite childhood property with more intelligence and seriousness but in the end, they can make more money with paper thing plotting and goofy comedy that appeals to the most people possible and especially to those who just want to be entertained with eye candy.
It's watchable but forgettable and will probably offend many of the hardcore Transformer nerds. Why did Optimus Prime have to have lips again?:D This movie probably would have broken my heart if it had come out in the late 80s. |
I agree with you on every point that you just made. It just shows what Hollywood is doing with all of its movies. They are designed to appeal to as many demographics as possible. I can almost guarentee you that the whole grandma flipping bird thing was suggest by some muthering suit that just had to get ITS word in. .
The movie needed to keep the serious tone that it started off with.
Can't wait for that JJ Abrams bit!!!! |

^^^^^ yeah right on. This is not a horrible movie and there are definitely great parts in it, but the comedy stuff will get old really fast. I guarantee that upon second or third viewing, NOBODY IN THEIR RIGHT MIND will laugh at Bumblebee pissing fluid on John Turtorro, or Bernie Mac's grandma flipping the bird, the Taco Bell dog pissing on Optimus, etc. It's ing retarded humour. Really, the entire first hour will get tedious to watch once you buy this on DVD.
Raiders of the Lost Ark is STILL very funny in parts, as are the original Star Wars, etc. Blockbuster movies are not nearly as good as they once were because studios interfere way too much or hire directors like Michael Bay who are little more than yes men (although he is good at making blow up).
I'll still go see the sequel because I'm curious if they can actually progress the franchise from this introductory installment. I would like to see it go much darker (like Empire Strikes Back) but if Bay and the original writers are brought back, it will just be a rehash of the original.
It's making a load of money though and that's the only point in making movies anymore so...I guess it's a success. |

or how about the Police tagline reading "to punish and enslave" instead of "to serve and protect"??lol i read that aloud and the dude beside me then noticed it and we were laughing our asses off while the rest of the theater seemed to be too taken up with the whole action sequence...
cant wait for the dvd to run the transformations in 1/2 time..hahhaa |

| i agree with Smitty so much here that I'm not even going to write a review. It just felt like your most typical action movie you can imagine infused with lots of cool ing special effects. |

| do u guys not remember that transformers WAS cheezy? oh yea thats right we were all rather young then and therefor it didnt seem so. I recently bought the G1 box set and started watching it and found it way too hard to finish watching it all cos of the cheese but stuck to wanting to watch the movie due to my attachment to it as a kid. |
