The worst being that some places might be off limit because deemed "familial" i.e. you need to be accompanied by a lady (friend, wife, sister, etc).
This might not exactly fit bahrain, but i would be surprised if it actually didn't, seeing how most arab countries are so conservative (backward). |
thats Saudi not Bahrain.. Even though we do have family sections in some restuarants, but that's more for privacy or not to have the couple (dont have to be married)/family be disturbed by the loudness of others...

social activities are resumed to going for shisha spots, playing cards, hanging at the coffe shop with friends and eating in restaurants. And yeah, males usualy stick with males and vice-versa. |
its not a must.. i hardly do these things whenever im in Bahrain (home).. and my group consists of alotta girls.. we can chill everywhere including each other's houses.. |

occrider, its all about the money, put your social life on the side for a couple of years, cash up and put it aside for a nice downpayment for your house when settled in the US or elsewhere in the west.

Yes it really is about the money. I'm not going there for the culture or the "sights". By now I've done enough research to know that there really aren't that many "sights" to see. Yea I guess there's the tree of life and a few other things, but really nothing exciting. And I'm socially very liberal so I'm not there for the semi restrictive culture. So it's really a question about whether I'm making a major/medium/minor/ or neglible social sacrifice for the money. After all that's said and done it seems medium/minor but more towards minor.
That's not to say there aren't pros. The one thing that is kinda exciting is this dynamic of Bahrain being a hub for Middle East partying, a large non-American expat population, and an American base that could lead to an interesting, diverse group of potential friends. Another thing is that I'll be doing a lot of travelling to the UK, Australia, Brazil, Argentina, Italy, and Egypt as a part of my job. Even better is that I get 27 days of vacation and that I'm in a prime position to explore Africa, Europe, or South East Asia.
Ultimately it's about the money though. I just found out that American expats have to pay US taxes, to some degree, regardless of where they live (quite retarded) so I'm looking into whether "tax free" Bahrain is really as good of a deal as it sounds. |

no, my company regulary sends people to Japan and the USA and their salaries aren't doubled or tripled or anything, just a minor raise plus a supplied and furnished appartment. Thats because Japan and the US aren't difficult to live in.
People go there for the experience more than the cash, contrary to the jobs found in the golf. |

the "familial" thing was the most annoying thing I found in Syria when i was there, and Syria is not the most "muslim" country out there... guys there are so deprived, that they'll annoy the hell of anything that has a .

yeah sure, you can do whatever you want in your own home, but the thing is that you're a native, hanging with native or foreign girls isn't a problem :) |
