You know what? At the end of the day you can weigh the possible pros and cons all you like, but you're never really going to know until you go there. Anything could happen man. It could be the worst decision you ever made, or it could end up being the best decision you ever made, plain and simple.

Now, you don't strike me as the coward type. I say just go for it.

Well said.

I don't think I'd even think twice about an opportunity like this. It doesn't happen everyday.

page 2 gave meome unexpected laughs...

but anyhow, it seems like an awesome offer. i don't know much about bahrain but i don't see why you shouldn't try it! it's better to try it and then if it doesnt work out for you then you would do what you needed to do.

i'll ask my dad and get back to you. he's spent a lot of time in bahrain.

Ultimately it's about the money though. I just found out that American expats have to pay US taxes, to some degree, regardless of where they live (quite retarded) so I'm looking into whether "tax free" Bahrain is really as good of a deal as it sounds.

I recall hearing something about if you live more than 6months overseas, you don't have to pay taxes or smth.. not sure. here are some links in case you need them, tho:

Moving from NY to Bahrain will be a big down grade on a social level, but career wise it will be great, with the gulf economies booming and Bahrain being known as a financial hub, it will be a good experience.
in terms of social life put in mind, Bahrain is not a big place and depending on your life style it can be even smaller, you'll probably see the same faces many times over, that can also be a good thing to get to know people, its also a common spot for business folk and flight attendants to stop by that love coming to Bahrain and staying there for a bit, it can feel like an exclusive party sometimes.
Clubs and some bars unfortunately have a rule that you can't come in unless escorted with a lady, but that wont apply to you since you're an expat, they'll let you in regardless, they do that just to keep the men to woman ratio balanced, i remember only two clubs played EDM the rest are top 40.
Bahrainis are a friendly crowd, you'll also find a good number of Brits, South Africans and Australians, there are a lot of Americans as well since there is a big naval base there.
in terms of food, Bahrain has many good upscale restaurants with impressive wine lists and the shisha lounges there are to die for.
as of Bahrain being a hub for middle east partying might be a little over exaggerated, Its no Dubai thats for sure.
I used to live 20 min away across from the border and Bahrain used to be my every other weekend destination whether to catch a movie dine in or go out.
Two years might be a bit of a stretch, then again i haven't been there in 3 years, people tell me it has gone through many changes since formula one took off, also put in mind if you get bored Dubai is just an hour flight away.

Occrider, regardless of the pros and cons of Bahrain itself, what are your current alternatives career-wise? How are things developing at your NYC job, what are your long-term goals and in how far can they be better achieved by going to Bahrain? Instead of merely claculating the financial benefit you'd gain each month compared to back home, I'd emphasize on the long-term strategy and ask myself how those 2 years aboroad would grant me the experience, the networks and the added value to the CV opening whole new job(life-standard opprutunities after the return. As some have pointed out, 2 years of sacrifice (and that is the highly unlikely worst case scenario) are basically nothing - and being 30 today is not what it used to be 40 years ago, you've still got pkenty of time for everything you desire. Moreover they'll probably pass by faster than you wish, with all the travelling and the first months of exploring a new city and culture. I wish I had the luxury of pondering about such decisions, congrats! ;)

oh there's no question about this, if you're single and looking for adventure, its a no-brainer.

If you get attached, worse, with kids, you won't be able to do it as easily.

i really couldn't live somewhere (much less work) for several years and where i really didn't wanted to be for a few more bucks. life's too short for that . those few extra bucks will never buy your time back, your youth, your friends, whatever. ever.

It'll just get you so much experience and so many good times you'd never have even imagined before. Friends are always there, can always ALWAYS make more and keep your old ones, it's always good to see new parts of the world.

I have no hometown, I've been moving from one place to the next my whole life and I haven't stopped having a blast and living a madness life since I can remember.

Go.
