Review: Daft Punk Alive 2007 - At Arrow Hall, Toronto.

Holy . best night out ever, period. more later.
so i get there, line was massive, waited and waited, doors opened up, met dima and chris and mahan in the line. waited a bit more.
Finally we get in. Sebastian and Kavinsky are on playing some old school stuff like i dont even remember what, but like not even EDM. then towards the end of their "set" if thats what you wanna call it i guess they started playing really well, good EDM, dont even know what to categorize it as, hard stuff, got ya moving.
Then the rapture came on, these guys were....okay at best, not really my taste, more suited to the teenage queen street rocker kids and emo's. but i must admit, they do have a good electronic flavour mixed in with their tunes, someone needs to remix their stuff. oh and by the way, NEEDS MORE COWBELL ! seriously one minute they have this guy going ape on a cowbell, next minute he's doing zabiela type stuff. not really with cdj's but it sounds like the zabiela working the stutter mode on a cd player. pretty cool
next, its maybe close to 9, maybe even past, sebastian and Kavinsky come on, and these guys brought their ing A-Game. holy , talk about warmup, that was hot. They kept teasing us with these awesome breakdowns and you thought that at any second, as it was after 9:30 by now, Daft Punk would come on, Nope. they kept teasing us. Dont know Sebastian and Kavinsky? Neither did i. all i have to say is they ing brought it, end of story.
also found it funny how everyone was facing the stage thinking the music was coming from there, but really it was from the centre of the floor where their DJ Booth was located.
NOW TIME FOR DAFT PUNK.
the curtains get pulled aside, there's the pyramid, wicked. i was saying to everyone i knew at the party when that curtain pulls away, you're gonna hear "robot rock". maybe thats how they start off at all their concerts, i don't know, but I ING CALLED IT !
ROCK ROBOT ROCK ROBOT ROCK ROBOT.....on and on and on and on, it drove you nuts... what a ing buildup. then out of nowhere Robot rock is blasting out of that system, and the crowd is going totally ing wild. they held Robot rock on for a while but i could imagine waht was next...
So everything Goes red The lights the pyramid, the LED Board behind them, i mean everything, and for a second i thought, no, no way it can't be, BUT IT IS !
TECHNOLOGIC !
they played the bit that was used in the busta rhymes track, "touch it". the robot voice, and the LED Board are saying/showing:
"TOUCH IT BRING IT PAY WATCH IT TURN IT LEAVE START FORMAT IT...TOUCH IT BRING IT PAY WATCH IT TURN IT LEAVE START FORMAT IT...TOUCH IT BRING IT PAY WATCH IT TURN IT LEAVE START FORMAT IT...

just an awesome buildup for technologic, it was just ing amazing, then they got into the actual song and everyone was just going crazy in there. I've always wanted to hear that live, theres a certain element to that track that is so subtle, but it makes me love it so much.
wow, holy , so many good moments, so forgive me if i dont get them in the right chronolgical order.
next up they played a mashup of around the world and harder beeter faster stronger, ing killer. just ing amazing. then i think they played around the world on its own and then harder better faster stronger for a bit, and then mixed that up with another one of their tracks.
see what i mean about mixing up the order, there was an older track before all of that, forget the name right now. its the one where the crowd was saying "HEY !" every 8 beats.
okay so next huge after harder better faster stronger, which they used the sample of a lot tonight, was probably DA FUNK. i think. Again, ing awesome, the crowd was going wild, just soaking it all in, but then again, when weren't they?
okay, just checked my phone's text message sent folder, i was wrong on the order again, sorry.
before Da Funk, they teased us.
ever watch the video for Digital Love? you know that gong sound (i guess) starts the video off? they started playing that and i thought digital love was coming on, to my disappointment, it wasnt digital love, but my feelings of temporary disappointment were gone when i heard:
"ONE MORE TIME"
a song i never really liked as much as digital love, but hearing it live is a whole other story. it drove me ing wild, made you wanna dance, ing incredible, just freakin incredible, and no other words could describe what it feels like to hear/dance to that live. just ing amazing.
next notable track that i can remember was the one they sampled from barry manilow, again, dont remember what its called, but it went..."something's in the air, something's in the air, something's in the air" that track was kickass as well.
i was dancing so hard, this was what Pure fun felt like. what an experience.
dont remember what song they used to close unfortuneately. but i believe it was soon after the last track i mentioned, could it have been something with a smapl of harder better faster stronger again? or was it another timeless daft punk track? dont really recall.
Anyways. the whole stage is illuminated, daft punk thanks the crowd, they were feeling the love. they go away and all the lights go out. everyone is clapping like yohan said, for 5 minutes, solid.
then, like a wave, people started noticing the reflections of the helmets. they were back, time for an encore baby ! but wait...no ing way, how sick is that? the crowd erupts at the sight of daft punk's glowing costumes. to describe it, it was like they were outlined, every edge traced over with red/orange lighting, because everything was so dark in the pyramid, they looked like a 3D animation, i couldnt believe my eyes, i knew they were there, but i was tricked into believing it was all a projection. also, whoever controlled the lights had control over the suits as well, because at some points the pyramid would be the only thing illuminated (no glowing suit), then them and nothing else(glowing suit), then everything all at once, very very very very very good job on the visuals.
Closing time, of the first encounter
So i remember what song they used to close the set, it was prime time of your life (i think). everyone was singing along, this really brought out the Vibe in that place. you could feel some serious energy just radiating around everywhere, people were high fiving and hugging people they didnt even know. thats what i call Unity. what an amazing experience.
so all the lights go on, the crowd, and on the stage, and daft punk are thanking the crowd, we showed them some serious love, and nearly everyone was doing the triangle symbol.
the lights went out, and they got thunderous applause.
like i said earlier, there was a wave of even louder applause when they came on for the encore, refer a few paragraphs up for that.
ENCORE
so now, the LED Board and robot voice is saying/showing:
"HUMAN HUMAN HUMAN HUMAN HUMAN HUMAN HUMAN HUMAN HUMAN HUMAN HUMAN HUMAN HUMAN HUMAN HUMAN HUMAN HUMAN HUMAN HUMAN HUMAN"
and it was this long solid buildup, and you didnt know what to expect, but i knew when this song goes into its climax, this place will erupt. It sure as hell did. it was the song of the night for me, holy , i almost cried it was so amazing. i never danced so hard, ever. i felt like i was gonna have a heart attack, i was going insane, dima can vouch for me on that. thank you for the water btw Dima ! it was THE PERFECT TRACK. yohan posted a video of it and i think that dima captured it as well. those are videos that i am gonna cherish forever.
last track to come on was one more time. perfect track to close the night, cause we hope to see daft punk again, ONE MORE TIME !

some more side notes...
luckily i found a nice spot to dance, there was this tiny area of barricades that you could stand inbetween. myself, and maybe at most 5 other people were in there, which gave me tons of room to dance and just let loose.
the lemonade stand. yes, wierd to see one there, but it was damn good lemonade.
funniest part of the night: dima and i were in line to get beer, when we realised HOLY , THEY HAVE WINE ?!?!?!?! we each got a glass of red, it tasted ike salad dressing, and i think we were the only people in the house to have wine, but whatev, it was a funny idea at the time.
wow. i think i got all the details covered. that was the best night out ever. top notch stuff. like i said later in this thread, that lighting and sound setup (which sounded so crisp) makes everyother sound and lighting setup look like it was done by amateurs, theres one club i know that can learn from these guys.
on another note, i think this may be the last thread i post in on this forum for a while. this event was awesome and those of you who chose not to go not only missed out, but were greatly missed, it truly was THE PERFECT EVENT.
and now, i bid you farewell.

That was the most INTENSE 90 mins of EDM EVER.
Laura and I arrived at Arrow Hall at 7:15 and OMG that was the longest line ever. (Laura, you rock for driving me) Waiting in the line and hearing the bass vibrate the entire building and I knew something big was going to happen tonight. Very fast line. Got inside in 20 mins. The search was quicker than going to CoZo. A quick pat on the pockets to see if you're smuggling any guns or anti tank knives in and you were through.
I've never been to any event with this much diversity in the crowd. Ravers, rockers, skaters, dorks and geeks, clubbers, goths, average joes, they were all there.
The venue itself was huge! And I think it was around 2/3 full. At least couple thousand people inside. That meant I didn't bother to get a beer because the lines were just crazy long. (Did anyone go to the Lemonade stand btw? Sketchiest thing I've seen at an event!)
The Rapture, that rock band, IMO sucked. I like good rock tunes just as much as the next guy, but I found most of their stuff to be rather bland and that consistent cowbell got annoying pretty fast. (Poor dude, banging that thing just like Will Farrell did in SNL. lol)
Sebastian and Kavinsky put down some heavy electrorock/electroclash, whatever you call that stuff. Wow. I guess you gotta be into that sort of stuff but they did a good job pumping up the crowd.
Daft Punk... Well, what can I say, except that they brought a show. That was the most crazy lightshow ever. Funkiest costume ever. Daft Punk played a concert style show, not a set, but there were some bits that they built up a tune so much that it was nuts.
I've never been to an event with this much vibe. One note going off and everyone goes berserk, cheering and hollering and stuff. At the end of the show, before the encore tune, 5 mins of solid ovation. Toronto loves Daft Punk.
And the encore was just crazy. Human. Together. One More Time. Crazy mashups. Love them all.
I wish they played more than 90 mins but I guess I gotta be satisfied with what I got because they met my high expectations. I doubt I'll do Daft Punk again unless they are part of a larger event because the tickets were a bit too much, but I highly encourage everyone to see Daft Punk at least once, if you're into French house and/or electro rock stuff.
Funny, I wonder if you took some of the rocker crowd into a French house event like old Bob Sinclair or Olav Basoski, how much they'd love French house because they loved every bit of French house Daft Punk tunes. LOL

the encore was good...enver heard it before. lights were awesome.

I going in around 8:45 and wasn't feeling Sebastian and Kavinsky. It wasn't bad at all but I wasn't in the mood for it I suppose.
DAFT IN PUNK. If there is one act, not even an act more like a phenomenon, to see it's them. What a damn power house these guys/robots/ are :p I've loved them since I was around 12 so for me this was much needed, appreciated and well rocked out to. I don't even think something will match this for a while, if ever.
As if my legs and body weren't dead from yesterday, my body is def. broken today and I wouldn't have it any other way. Hearing robot rock as an opener just gave me a permanent smile off the back. in tune after tune after classic tune. It was nothing short of eargasms.
Only bad thing about this whole night was that it wasn't long enough. I have been daft punk'd.
OH and hearing Da funk and one more time live blew me away. |

ah damnit ! i was hoping that encore could be found on one of the sets that are out there, damnit, thats disappointing, i hope, although i somewaht doubt, that this was recorded. or that they come out with an Alive 2007 Tour CD featuring that encore tune. like, i think that track was nothing shy of PERFECT, ing incredible, beyond words. my ears were never so lucky to be blessed by such a perfect track. the long buildup, the main course of the track itself, the visuals adding to it. just holy....freakin....crap |
