On a side note, I am also all for a "variable" limit based on license class and car type. I think there should be an extra lane on highways like the QEW with a speed limit in the 150's. However, you have to apply for a different license, and drive a car approved to be safe at those speeds. Obviously, this limit only applies in good conditions. Rain/snow reverts it back to normal.

sounds good in theory, but that would be a logistical and costly nightmare to implement. you'd have two-tier licensing, education/training for front line officers, costs of administering the program and updating it every year, political drama with the automakers as to what qualifies a vehicle for the higher limit allowance, etc.

couple that with real life factors. While there is zero doubt that a performance car (e.g. BMW 5 series) could handle 150km/h vs. a piece of economy deathtrap like a Toyota Echo, if that owner fails to maintain the car (e.g. radically underinflated tires, brakes or suspension in need of repair, etc), it could be the case that it's MORE dangerous for that person to exceed the limit than in a "non-approved" vehicle.

I agree with you in theory...I'd love to see people have to demonstrate driving skill (and on a regular basis) to enjoy higher driving privileges...but it's never going to happen here.

Personally, I still don't think the laws are even close to strict enough....I agree that the speed limit on highways should be higher....120 but should be enforced strictly. If you are caught speeding at 150 or higher I think you should have your licence taken away immediately and never be allowed to have a licence again.

somebody is bitter because people always pass him?

fool other countries allow much higher speeds than Ontario and they are just as "safe". You can drive like an idiot at any speed.

no....I've seen too many people killed by idiot drivers who think they can travel at 150 km and can react quickly enough to every possible situation around them.

^^^ that's my main concern.

I'm quite confident in my own driving ability...but I can't account for every retard on the road.

braking distances are long enough at normal highway speeds if some idiot suddenly cuts into your lane...at 150+, it's an automatic collison and at that speed, people are far more likely to be seriously injured or killed.

This is exactly what many ppl don't consider when they dignify their dangerous driving habits.

You can be an ace behind the wheel, but if the drivers around you aren't - you're playing Russian roulette.

OPP officer speeding on duty charged with street racing
680News staff 2009-02-10 17:28 Brant County OPP say they clocked an OPP officer in her cruiser going 65 kilometres over the speed limit.

The OPP say the alleged incident happened while the Detective Constable was on duty, but her speeding had nothing to do with her work at that moment.

The officer was charged with street racing, her car was seized and her drivers license has been suspended for seven days.
