Pfffft. Shut up, Del.

agreed on most points, but I'll qualify that on these:

-Courts can impose a driver's license suspension of up to 10 years for a second conviction, if the second conviction occurs within 10 years of the first conviction.
I'm in support of this ASSUMING that it's going to be reserved for the most serious offenders and that someone merely caught for doing 150km/h in a straight line on a non-crowded highways isn't going to be unduly punished.
quote:
-The Act also bans driving a motor vehicle on a highway with a connected nitrous oxide system. Some street racers use nitrous oxide to enhance the acceleration capabilities of their vehicle.
stupid stupid stupid. This is pre-emptively punishing people and I 100% disagree with this line of reasoning. It's a vote grab that plays on the ignorance of people who don't understand or care about car enthusiasts.
many responsible racers take their cars to the track or remote areas and constantly installing and removing a nitrous system is impractical. They're already doing away with the car warranty and risking voiding some insurance coverage since it *could* be deemed to be a "material change in risk" or whatever insurers call it. There is NO need to punish people simply for modding their car.
Who drew the line at nitrous systems? What about aftermarket turbo and supercharger setups? engine swaps? multiple bolt-on mods like intake/header/downpipe/exhaust/etc? sway bars? suspension kits?
all of these are "performance enhancers" too and a decent turbo or SC adds more power than all but the most aggressive nitrous systems.
why punish a guy in a civic (except for being a loser) who puts a nitrous system on his car, while there are guys in stock Vettes who are driving cars that are still twice as powerful? you're telling me that the modded Civic owner is "more likely" to race than a guy in a pure sports car? faulty logic, IMHO.
what about car makers who install this stuff as "stock" parts? You can buy a Neon...oops, sorry...SRT4 wtih a stage 3 Mopar package that is *ridiculously* powerful for a small car...but that's legal because it was bought that way from the dealer?
illogical...
as for the 50 over...there is NO reason to be going 50 over the limit anywhere...so I support that law.

Airport driving in between the terminals...... Cops are hidden in the most weirdest spots that you would be surprised.
Ortemy
What I am surprised about is that our speed limit is 100 km/h. I drove around Europe this summer and I have not seen such restrictions on any freeways. The lowest is 110 km/h, the highest is 130 km/h. I think only in North America we have such low speed limits and I wonder why...

Yeah, sure, some politicians are not really shorsighted and are always looking for long term solutions
Anways, there was that whole watch your car as it is being totalled after being cought racing.... Yes, those that race should feel the heat, but these legislations obviously widen the net too much and are very poorly thought out.
so you're suggesting that for an average person going over 50 Km/hr is ok, great for those idiots who drive over 90km/hr in a 40 zone

1st) EXCELLENT ing job on the Cal avatar!!! "HEY GUY whats up?"
2nd) Ditto... though Ive only driven around the airport area (the general Dixon area and in the airport itself) maybe 4-5 times in the last two years, Ive never ever seen a cop hiding out, and i dont exactly drive the posted slow speed limit either.
the only time ive seen cops kicking around was when they were making all the cars drive off who like to park just off the ramps to kill time i guess while they wait to pick ppl up, lol

As usual, the politicians think they know better than the traffic engineers what causes accidents.
Unsafe lane changes are by far the biggest factor, not speed. The "weavers" are part of this, but it should be abundantly obvious to anyone who drives that merging slower than the traffic flow is far more dangerous than merging faster. Forcing the traffic to a slower speed doesn't solve that problem, because people simply won't drive that slowly (and the retards will just merge even slower).
I don't see how anybody can blame the city, though. This is under provincial jurisdiction, and it's the McGuinty government to a tee.

lol what a bunch of ing dumbasses
35 deaths since 1999, that's almost 9 ing years there
how about worrying about truck drivers speeding, doing unsafe lane changes that cause most deaths and accidents on the highways? even with all these stupid ing laws we have the worst drivers on the planet (example would be a chick talking on the phone switching lanes on the highway going 130 without signaling and me almost smashing into her) why don't they crack down on those drivers? why do i have to be considered a racer the minute i hit 150, what ing dumbass came up with that law.
also i love people that say OMG 150 is way too fast, no it's not ing way too fast, the average speed on 407 is 130-140 in the left lane. 150 is not MUCH faster than that.
this law should only apply to actual racers and/or dangerous drivers that are reckless on our roads/highways. Those are the drivers that could potentially cause harm. Me driving 150 in straight line at 3am is not harmful to anyone.
also the new 0.05-0.08 law, what the is that all about, so if i get pulled over and i'm below the 0.08 limit but i'm at 0.05 my car will get towed? who comes up with this
geroin
btw this is how votes go through in the states, haha i wonder if it's the same here
that's ing amazing

I believe the BAC provision only applies if you're convicted of some other offense. In other words, if you're caught racing AND they find that your BAC is 0.05 or higher, then you could get a suspension.
I'm no fan of Ontario's speed traps, but if someone merges into your lane going 130 and you almost hit them, then I'm sorry to say you're going too fast. Traffic engineers use the 85th percentile (see Del's article, but you can even find it on Wikipedia), and on the provincial freeways that is usually somewhere around 120. 130 is a bit fast, 140 is pretty fast; that's why people only do that in the outer lane on the 407. 150 really is, well, nuts. If you're going faster than the fastest drivers on a highway with light traffic, you're going too fast. Much more simply, if you're not going with the flow then you're either going too slow or too fast.
OK - on a totally empty highway having no curves, in peak daylight and dry weather, driving a 6-cylinder car with anti-locking brakes in top condition, maybe 150 is reasonable, or even 160. But speed limits aren't even supposed to be posted for ideal conditions, they're supposed to be posted for typical conditions. That's why the engineers actually look at how fast most people go before deciding what the speed limit should be.
