Ok team, I am finally posting my review!
What a great first time out of the country I had. Tom and I traveled together and split the cost of the trip and some other friends of mine were also at the Holiday Inn with us. Kelly and co. were only a short cab ride away in the fancy hotel :)
Tom and I left early Friday morning and as luck would have it we were on the same bus as Kelly and Kelly. That was such an awesome bonus as both of them know their way around Canadia and were happy to point things out to me on our journey to Montreal.

We arrived safely and parted ways. Tom and I checked into the Holiday Inn which was in the Chinatown part of Montreal. The hotel was really cool and there was a pond/fountain with giant goldfish and bridges going across it in the lobby.

And if you looked out the hotel window, the Palais des Congres is diagonally across the street to the left. Close enough to run across the street to, to avoid the coat check lines.

So Tom and I get settled when.... HORRIBLE HOME SAFETY ACCIDENT! I told you guys about that already. Lets not relive it. :nervous: :nervous: :nervous:
Tom and I explored the town the first night (Friday), checked out where Bal en Blanc was going to be held, went to dinner, and then went to Stereo for afterhours.

Stereo is in awesome! I have to explain this a little, cause I didn't really understand it myself until we went there. So apparently there are 2 different parts of Stereo. The first part is downstairs and is called StereoBar. And that's exactly what it is. It's the part of the club that serves the alcomahol. We didn't make it there the first night. Then, now this was horrific to me, they stop serving alcohol at 3AM in Montreal! WTF!
But then they open up the upstairs for afterhours and that's where all the good music and partying is :D Unfortunately cameras were not allowed. Tom and I got there a little after 4AM and the place was packed! And they were playing really really good techno! Kinda different from NY. Oh and there were the prettiest gay boys there I wanted to bring them all back to NY but Tom wouldn't let me.
Tom and I spent the day on Saturday doing touristy things. We shopped, walked around town, and visited Kelly, Wai, and co. in the fancy hotel. Let me tell you ppl, the Holiday Inn is to be recommended... but Kelly's hotel was schweet! The rest of our friends arrived in our hotel in the evening and we decided to go to Stereo again.
This time we got there while StereoBar was still open. It was good, but the music could have been a little better. I know it was kinda early (12-1AM ish), but I think the dj could have done a little better job. It was rather slow until the end.
I had been doing just fine with my screwdrivers. I met a boy from NY who lives in Union Square, we were doing soco and lime shots, it was great. And then they ing close the bar at 3! :whip: :whip: :whip: So we went upstairs for afterhours and it was just as cool as it was the night before. But without that life-sustaining vodka to keep me goin... I only made it for about another hour and a half before I had to go back to the hotel.
Sunday! The big day! We did more touristy things during the day. We got some poon tine, (Help me Kelly, I have no idea how to spell it. I still want to say that I ate some poon tang for lunch.) which is a local delicacy consisting of fries, cheese balls, and gravy. It was actually really good. I wish we had it here. I also tried bubble tea in Chinatown for the first time. That was really cool. Apparently we have it in our Chinatown too.

And now... BAL EN BLANC! If you've made it this far reading, you're a trooper! We took a few pictures before hand, but they wouldn't allow cameras inside. I didn't manage to get in any of the professional photos unfortunately. I wish you guys could have seen the pants I was wearing! One of my friends managed to get a camera in, but I haven't gotten those pics yet.

I have never in my life been to anything like that, it was amazing! We definitely misjudged what time to leave the hotel, cause we were in line for over 2 hours. We missed Infected Mushroom completely, and came in on Ferry's first or second song. Then a few minutes later he played Beautiful! Yay! I loved Ferry's set. He never fails to play such cheerful, happy, uplifting music.
The place itself was unreal. You go in and there's a center area where they have vendors and a massage area set up. I spent $40 on glowsticks for my pants, lol. The house room was on the left as we entered and the trance room was to the right. And the place is so effin huge that the sound didn't mix at all. The one thing that completely confused and disoriented me until I figured it out is that the place is set up like a stadium. I would leave the trance room on one side to go out in the corridor, and then accidentally enter it again on the other side. And then be befuddled as to how they moved the dj booth to the other side of the room through ten thousand people.
I made my first Canada friend there, this really awesome dude Nikita. He and I spent most of the night together roaming around and dancing. This place was crazy. I bought a fruit salad there. How cool that they sell fruit salad! Armin's set was awesome. 2 songs that stood out for me were What the and Megashira. Yay Megashira :D
I made it for a lot of Menno's set, til like 10:30, but I was exhausted by that point. Nikita looked at me and he was like, Erica, I can see it in your face, you are DONE. I was. We all went back to the hotel and rested. And then Nikita and I spent the day together shopping all around the city.
Such an awesome trip. I had such a great time in Canada I definitely want to go back. I'd like to go for WEMF, that looks really cool. Highly recommend Bal en Blanc to everyone. You'll definitely see me there next year! |
