Immigration in Canada.

I recently came across this entry in one of my acquaintance’s journals on Purerave.com.
I came to Canada when I was 4, and my parents has nothing but the clothes on their backs. They worked REALLY hard to get to where they are today, so you can imagine how angry I was when I read this.
I just wanted to see what some of your reactions/opinions are to it.
(And please spare us the "Your first problem is that you're on "purerave.com" smartass comments that we all know you love to make)

Over the last year I have become quite upset with immigrants!! They come here and get $2,500--$3,000 a month to survive, a minimum of $25,000 to start a business that they don't have to pay back, health care, dental care and much more. I've been a working Canadian and I get NOTHING!! People who were in war for this country are lucky if they get a $1,200 monthly pension and these ******s coming over here are trying to change our laws and freedoms, like not being allowed to have a Christmas tree, it's now a holiday tree if that is even allowed. IMMIGRANTS!! LEt them fend for themselves in their own country just as we must in our own country!!
I realize some of you may or may not come from an immigrant family. Rest assured I hold nothing against you. It's the ignorent people that bug me. |

| racest ? I don't know where he's getting his info from either, all Canadians are entitled to business loans, and every Canadian gets healthcare. |

what's this talk about 2-3K and 25K? I thought YOU (an immigrant) had to show you have enough initial funds to come here, no?
in any case, I find the above quote incredibly ignorant - not all immigrants are like that, so he's making a huge sweeping generalization
however, he has a point about trying to bend traditions and rules (holiday trees for example)
i'm in a different immigration category right now, so it'd be hard to comment more tbh... |

| lolz ... let me just say that door swings both ways. there are some immigrants who come to a country and all of a sudden they think they own the fawking place. i do not disagree with that. there are good and bad everywhere. but it must also be realized that Canada by a large amount depends on immigrants coming to the country and working. take western side of Canada for example ... i personally know people who have closed down their busineses out there because they cant find people to work. no man power. but at same time take Toronto for example there are lots of people here who are from other countries and have worked theeir ass off to get some where in life but yes at same time there are few who just sit on welfare and do nothing. immigrants have a huge role in a country's economy. they do things that other people run away from. and they dont mind doing it because its still is a better oppurtunity for them. this guy needs to spend a week in my town here in Pakistan. he will understand very clearly why people are eager to go to other country and dont mind doing whatever it takes to survive. and as for opening businesses and earning money ... well my friend if you spend less time bitching and more time working on your qualifications and skills there is no reason why you cant earn same amount of money and have the same oppurtunity as anyone else. |

IMMIGRANTS! |
this is like a scene straight out of that movie crash, what a loser. The only thing I agree w/ is the unreasonable change of customs, but come to think of it I can't think of any that really bother me. I mean not letting a sikh carry a ceremonial knife on a train is ridiculous. Our tolerance is something people know about around the world and respect. And your parents are the best, I love them. What she failed to include is that both of them came over w/ finished nuclear physics degrees, and NEVER bitch about not having a job in their field or pay equal to their merits. They work hard to make less than they're worth so that they can live w/ the values here and their kids can take advantage of them to the fullest. Mad respect. The only immigrant i find annoying is the first generation immigrant that feels that they always need to talk about the job they "could have had". I think the first generation should have to work harder than normal because didn't all of our first generation relatives have to work harder to gain a spot?
and trust, working in the visa department at our embassy in pakistan, working here is nothing compared to "getting" here!
can you satisfy curiosity w/ this guys age? |

Yep, I agree. Respecting diversity is very important in our country. Although, there is always the possibility (sometimes actualized) that extreme and arguably silly scenarios may arise wherein people will appeal to respect for diversity in order to back their desire for policy reform or whatever it may be. For instance, there is a situation somewhere in Western Canada where a certain group is (if I recall correctly, I'm rather hazy on the details) suing the government (or some other entity) because its members feel they are being discriminated against by having to pose for a picture for license granting purposes. Being able to clearly identify that license X belongs to person X is, especially for legal purposes, the more important matter--is it not? |
