a lot of people complain about the top djs selling out and becoming more commercial...
but stop and think about it before you rant.
to represent trance/house/ or any edm genre your goal is to reach your music to the biggest audience possible and "share this sound with as many people as possible." - kenneth thomas
if you were the world's number one dj, i think it would HAVE to be your responsibility to use that status to represent your genre of music to the world and mainstream audience. thats the key to our growth. sure armin makes cheesy covers and trys to be the poster boy of trance, sure armin makes more commercial music with other pop artists like "love you more" with raccoon...
but i know for a fact that my friends (who never heard trance in their lives) are starting to enjoy dance music because of that song being raped on the radio... how can that be a bad thing??
now they stop labeling the music as "techno" but as "trance" instead.
i mean it would be nice for armin to go back to his roots in the underground and start being more "boundless" and "vast" but what does that do to the scene? it just maintains our pleasure and keeps us satisfied but doesnt help attracting new comers into the scene.
thats not to say armin completely sells out his name 100%.... if you go hear one of armin's set its not nearly as commercial as you would think... he will drop anything from dubfire to sander van doorn to sasha to even trentmoller sometimes. this is awesome exposing the newbie fans to a variety of music rather than just the commercial stuff they expected to hear.
i think with popularity you have that responsibility.. look what deep dish did with "say hello" and look what sharam did with "P.A.T.T."... its brilliant, there are people in my class that listen to hiphop and rock that can hum those tunes.
"It is a music business and in order for it to thrive you have to cater to the masses" - Sharam
let the underground djs and producers make the underground tracks and let the top jocks do their thing. these are the poster boys to our style of music for the outside world.
if people hate him selling out so much then we should see a decline in his popularity soon anyways and hell drop from the number one spot.
people need a stepping stone to get into trance. there are more "politics in dancing" than you think... |

It can be a bad thing because things like this - " http://www.tranceaddict.com/forums/...14&forumid=1&s= ", start to happen. The only way to kill a music genre is by taking it into the Mainstream. |

Not at the expense of quality.

What a nice representation. So if I tell friends I like trance, they think I like cheesy stuff like Love you more and The Anthem, and that's not a bad thing?

What it does now to the scene: bigger demand for cheesy music which leads to more bland trance productions without any inspiration. Also, it shows upcoming DJ's that whoring pays off. Great for the scene man |
