I want to add this, from a Tiesto (number 1 promoting) viewpoint.

The big problem with having the marketing team hype up the event, and with promoters also hyping their event, is the wrong type of people are attracted to the event.

As soon as this happens, the DJ enters a vicious circle. He can turn up, with all the care and intention to play an integrity-ridden underground set, but he will know (after performing some shows at this level); that the crowd that turn up, will stand there like bored "morans" until that DJ thinks,to hell with it, i'll drop my track from 2000 and see if they react.

Armin and Tiesto are both guilty of leaving behind their best intentions and just "going with it" in the big room style, playing to way too many people at a time, and of course, the WRONG people.

When i see Tiesto in a concert, the performance is completely trite. The experience of the night is more a list of calamitous errors and negative observations about the people around me, than it is about how well Tiesto has DJ'ed.

When i see him perform in a 1000-capacity intimate venue, without the 24'000 other people who showed up "because its Tiesto"... then I get to see and hear a completely different DJ.

I'm not defending Armin, I just think that guys like him and Tiesto still have it inside them to make a decent set. The problem is the type of event that they agree to, and the target audience of these events, are ruining these guys reputations.

The worst part of that last point, is that as it was their decision to take that path... Armin (or Tiesto) should get no sympathy from us at all. They screwed up their career chasing the fame. Too bad.We can always find some better DJ to support anyway.

Googooly clearly hasn't reached that level of understanding with EDM yet. Hopefully he does one day. Although I wouldn't count on it.

Some pretty good points.

Case in point... Back a few years, Armin came to New York, did a set at an underground club (Arc, R.I.P.) on a Wednesday night, and tore the place up. Totally different set than the usual mega-club sets he would bore with. Had to have been max 500 people in the place, and quite possible the best Trance experience I've had.

Hello together,

there's a very emotional discussion going on, that always happens when people talk about taste. Some persons here were asking for Armin-Fans that "don't throw fire out of their ass", well, here I am, although I don't consider myself as a big fan.

But I have been to last year's Armin Only, and have to say that I liked it. I didn't like every detail, e.g. the live vocals or that total glorification of Armin, but I liked the music and the people there (that partially travelled far further than I did). And no, even after 9 and a half hours I didn't get bored.

I also like the music in most of the ASOTSs (although the Top20 is not my personal Top20), and I was at the ASOT 300-party (what was one of the best parties this year for me). Next year I'll go again, not because I want to discover the border between "reality and unreality", but rather because I'll combine it with a few days in Amsterdam (where I've never been so far), and because I know that I'm going to have a good time there - Am I now a bad person, that only listens to commercial crap? I don't think so.

Personally, I like a Vandit Night with PvD more than an Armin Only Event, because Paul doesn't put himself so much in the foreground and he also spins something like 7 hours. But at both parties You can have a lot of fun.

I'd love to attend to events with the DJs You mentioned, but if You have a look at the bigger DJ's tour schedules, You'll see that (especially southern-)germany is pretty much left out. So what would You do? Stay at home and listen to the radio, not going out because some people discrimante the music You like as "commercial crap"? Sure not...

That's just my 2 cents...

Nowadays every DJ, big or small, has it's own marketing approach.

For years Armin worked for the number 1 position and status. (nice little trivia, The guy who got Tiesto's carreer rolling is Armin's manager for some years.) For reaching bigger crowds you have to take musical comprisses. It's just in the game. When I speak from my music-heart I will say that every artists must always choose for the music. However when I look through my marketing glasses it is a different story. Guys like tiesto, pvd and armin clearly choose for the more commercial route and you really can't blame them. It brought them fame, fortune and great gigs which they could never get otherwise.

Maybe for some people the theme is a bit odd. However remember holland has a lot of big dance events. With a theme you can do a lot with decorations, visuals, music and lighting. You just simply increase the visitors experience. Just a few lights and lazers isn't enough anymore here in the netherlands.

But will I go to this party? Hell No, there are much better partys to find.
