here's a site that compiled a list of the world's best beers according to "master raters" worldwide. it's not supported by big brewers and distributors and only 20% of the raters are American, so it should give some people an idea of some of the well-respected American beers/breweries out there...

http://www.ratebeer.com/ratebeerbest/

unibroue makes most of the top rated beers domestically here in canada. Raftsman, blanche de chamblay, maudite, fin du monde, trois pistoles, eau benite etc. some of the best beers i have ever had.

jump across the border, any ontario beer store carries most of them.

and american website might i add.....

i'm not saying the site is the end-all, be-all of beer rating... but it definitely gives an idea of some of the great beers out there, and to say that it's totally wrong because it's based in America is pretty silly.

i'll definitely try some of the other Unibroue brews. they carry a few other ones at the bar up the street but i was so obsessed with the Maudite that it's all i ever drank when i went there.

apparently Trader Joes Vintage Ale is also brewed by Unibroue.

I'm not flamming you Myra... you didn't state that the raters on this site were experts... the n00b did, I'm questioning what exactly he considers an expert... if being a member on that site qualifies one as an expert on beer then I now fit his criteria.

Additionally, I put my address down as being in Yemen... so as to not make it look like I have a bias toward Canadian beers;)

edit... I do check user ratings on hotels; however, I would not consider the raters to be experts in the hospitality industry.

I said experts as in print journalists, authors etc. I was NOT talking about the users of THAT site.

I suppose it's just coincidence that every beer you named is on their list of best US beers.

Tell you what... cite someone with real credentials, like an independent panel of brewmasters... I'd consider a brewmaster to be an expert.

I prefer this site: http://www.beeradvocate.com

The same beers are also rated highly there you will see.

Also, I don't quite see how being a 'brewmaster' (which isn't even the term, btw) would make you an expert on beer. Brewing beer is no harder than cooking food, it actually takes a lot of the same skills. Your mother I am sure makes fantastic food but I doubt her credentials as a 'cookmaster' mean she will be writing restaurant reviews anytime soon. The experts are those who do something as a profession, in this case the journalists and authors.

Look out for the works of the late Michael Jackson, famous beer writer.
