hey i'm not a fan of a lot of minimal either, but rhythm melodies are an integral part of many forms of music throughout the history of mankind

if you said that to be funny and enlarge your imaginary e-penis, it was a rather trite attempt

spastik is like - 'ecstatic aboriginal drum circle in a little box'

I'm not trying to be funny, i just have no understanding for this usage of the word "melody". Why do rhythm(ic)/percussion patterns suddenly become 'rhythm melodies' just because we're talking about plastikman/mnml?
system9
ive been slowy getting into minimal so these suggestions are great thanks

I don't have the slightest clue on what the hell is "minimal" any more. Seriously, every single track people listed in this thread that I recognised (and I do like a lot several of them), I labelled it as tech-house or straight techno.

:wtf:

minimal = minimal techno pre "minimal" hype + 2% of "minimal" today:happy2:

it's a figure of speech. basically the pattern of drums forms a characteristic figure as an effect of the superimposition of all of the parts. because they are pitched in various ways it forms what i'm calling a 'rhythm melody'

why are you so up in arms about this?

i think it's one of the key elements of a lot of minimal tracks, a sort of rhythmic hook. when i am at a party i can't help but mouth the percussion sounds like they are words in a sentence

@system9 - most of the suggestions aren't minimal, be careful

I think it's misleading to call it a "melody" though, especially when someone asks for "melodic minimal" in a way that clearly implies a search for conventional melody.

The idea of a hook being of something other than a conventional melody is not new to minimal techno, of course. This is why I have a problem with the aesthetic of "minimal" and especially the idea that there's "real" minimal and then there's just stripped-down techno. There's nothing particularly unique or essentialist about what minimal techno does, and yet the idea of "minimal" simply as an adjective is rejected by a lot of people. Stripped-down is minimal, in that it's reducing something to its bare essentials. I don't see the fundamental difference between the two.

Besides, most minimal is still one step above true minimalism. The KLF believed that the key to great music was the soul and personality of the creator. They wrote:

We await the day with relish that somebody dares to make a dance
record that consists of nothing more than an electronically programmed
bass drum beat that continues playing the fours monotonously for eight
minutes. Then, when somebody else brings one out using exactly the
same bass drum sound and at the same beats per minute (B.P.M.), we
will all be able to tell which is the best, which inspires the dance
floor to fill the fastest, which has the most sex and the most soul.
There is no doubt, one will be better than the other.

If you want to get pretentious about some grand philosophy of minimal dance music, I'd argue that the above is still the ultimate and still the unachieved.
nefardec
i'm personally very uninterested in this sort of philosophy when it comes to the dance floor

what minimal i do like, i like because it is raw, basic, rhythmic, and often hedonistic.

the music i buy and play, however, is mostly very lush and what i would call soulful (and still often raw and rhythmic)

but that's a pretty interesting klf bit

it may have been misleading, but i suppose i was trying to challenge the OP to reconsider what 'melody' is in regards to minimal, so that s/he doesn't end up just looking for a bunch of tracks with a certain style drum track and a cheesy melody overlaid on it

I understand what it is you're refering to, i'm just taking issue with the expression. It's stupid, it's like saying a drummer plays a melody on his kit.

And also, in reference to Spastik, it ("rhythm melody") came across as a glorification of what is actually nothing but a boring exercise in very unimpressive drum machine programming. But, i'm not saying that's what you intended.

i happen to like spastik, but let's be clear that i use that phrase personally to describe many, many tracks, not as a way to glorify this track that you seem to particularly dislike

i think there is something to it, however, and given the fact that drum machines and sequencers are not drum kits, i think there is a potential to approach melody that has been attempted (the success is subjective and i'd rather not debate taste)
