ps, did this happen as often before columbine? i never really remember hearing about school shootings much growing up before high school....then again, i never paid much attention to stuff like that either...so if it happened, i may have been oblivious.

i cant say it happened as often, but it did happen. it just was rarely reported to the news.

We always get the same arguement that the criminals have guns too etc but these random shootings never appear to be carried out by criminals, it's usually some angry deadbeat or some social recluse.
Why would criminals be shooting up schools? They're spending their bullets in the hood, not on campus.

Idiot, if you actually look at discharges of less-than-lethal weapons such as mace and tazers you'll see that the number has shot up astronomically. Why? Because a firearm discharge for a police officer was absolutely a measure of last resort. Whereas a mace or tazer discharge is now commonly being used to replace the critical negotiation and conflict-resolution skills that cops used to use.
They just taze everyone and lock them up for a night. On top of that, since mace and tazer discharges do not leave visible and permanent marks, cops are using more and more often and getting away with it.
Of course, this is all largely irrelevant because if you had not been such a tunnel-visioned idiot - you'd see that leaving weapons in the hands of the authority and leaving yourself defenseless is the dumbest thing you can possibly do. Liberals always complain about the encroachment on civil liberties via Patriot Act or wire-tapping (and I know because I am a liberal), but paradoxically they are the first to give away the one last and absolute measure to defend those civil liberties: weapons.
If you don't like guns then move to your quasi-utopia paradises with zero firearms and wait for the next inevitable dictatorship to hijack the government. It's not a coincidence that one of the first things that any dictatorship does is outlaw private firearm ownership.
