Have you looked at the government lately?

What checks and balances? The judiciary is firmly in the pocket of the executive branch, walking lockstep with the White House and taking cues from them while the Dem controlled Congress rolls over for the Republican White House every chance they get.

Renewal of the Patriot ACT, circumvention of FISA courts, rendition to foreign soil, torture, an executive branch shrouded in secrecy, a criminal war abroad, a country being bankrupted and run into the ground while Congress continues to handout blank checks to Executive branch - where are those checks and balances exactly?

I think you missed my point. I would argue that there has been absolutely no change to the democratic form of government with the checks and balances from the three branches in the last 50 years. There is no "root of totalitarianism" like what Yuris is pointing out is trending right now with his criticism of the checks and balances.

Therefore, getting rid of guns wouldn't do a damn thing because the checks and balances are working just fine today to ensure the safety of citizens. The trends he pointed out are nothing new to be worried about and he's also focusing on the few issues that make the highlight reel but ignoring the 90% of government activity that demonstrates its proper functionality.

Anti-gay group to protest NIU funerals
Published: Feb. 18, 2008 at 12:34 PM

WONDER LAKE, Ill., Feb. 18 (UPI) -- A Baptist group led by the Rev. Fred Phelps will protest the funerals of two victims of the Illinois campus shootings saying it was God's revenge against gays.

Steven Kazmierczak, 27, opened fire in a geology class last Thursday at Northern Illinois University killing five students and later himself.

Phelps leads members of the Westboro Baptist Church of Kansas who protest the funerals of Iraqi war veterans, claiming their deaths are God's revenge against homosexuals.

A release on the group's Web site says it considers the shootings an act of God, the Arlington Heights (Ill) Daily Herald said Monday.

The group said it planned to protest the funerals of Catalina Garcia and Ryanne Mace because Northern Illinois University hosted a seminar with another preacher who disagreed with Phelps' views.

It isn't as if these people were considered "sane" before - but ffs, this just really seems like they're reaching.

You'd have to be living in a dark cave on Neptune to believe that.

American government has fundamentally changed in the past 50 years.

50 years ago Eisenhower warned us in his farewell address about the dangers of a military-industrial complex in bed with the rest of the government - nowadays it's true and more insidious than ever.

50 years ago - we executed Japanese for "waterboarding" POWs because we considered it a war crime, now we try to circumvent all manners of laws to do it ourselves.

The change to the government has been dramatic from where it was 50 years ago. However, much like a chicken that has been placed into a pot while the water has slowly been heated up - you're completely ignorant to the fact that you are in fact being cooked.

Of course, you would actually have to live in an environment where that has happened before - to see the parallels in US. For those who haven't, I don't blame them for having this fantastically rosy view of US.

sorry, anybody that uses the conspiracy theorist catchcry of "military industrial complex" automatically wins my ire.

Im also always dubious of those that hold up previous statesmen as beacons of light when people 50 years from now could be quoting bush on terrorism ffs. I struggle to see ANY substantial change in the american political format before 911. and only after that because of the scaremongering of a now lame-duck discredited president who nobody takes seriously any more.

The new laws are merely a new law away from being fundamentally different, and the houses have not continued their resolution supporting the bush admin's wiretapping program.

Politics is always in a state of flux, the US lived through nixon and hoover, they'll live through bush.

And the fact of the matter is that it does seem to be a pretty much uniquely American problem, so if you'd like to go find me the global statistics for school shootings and prove me wrong I'd be thrilled.

There's plenty of killings globally, it just doesn't make the news.
