Well the season is just around the corner so i thought it high time to start a thread for '08. I think we need some pre-season predictions as they were fun to check back on at the end of the season (especially when you predict that the grand final winning coach will be sacked like i did haha). I'll get back with mine soon.
To kick off a bit of discussion however, so Chris Judd is named captain of Carlton today. Obviously the best player they have in their team, if not possibly the competition, however having not yet played a game for the team he's going to captain I do find that a little strange. I wonder if it's ever happened before? (actually i think it may have happened when John Rantal transferred to North Melbourne from Essendon at the start of the 1975 season - the year we won our first flag). |

Not surprised with Judd's app but it will probably divide the Carlton faithful.
Was a reluctant Capt at the Eagles - will this be in their best interests?
My predictions
Brownlow - J Brown / Kerr
Premiers - Geelong (beating St Kilda)
First coach sacked - Wallace. There is word that if Terry Wallet is 1-5 or worse after the first 6 games he is gone with Sheedy the replacement.
Rising Star - Rhys Palmer
Wooden Spoon - Richmond
Coleman - Brown
My Ladder
Geelong
St Kilda
Fremantle
West Coast
Port Adelaide
Western Bulldogs
Hawthorn
Brisbane
North Melbourne
Sydney
Collingwood
Adelaide
Carlton
Melbourne
Essendon
Richmond |

a bloke that hasnt played a game for the club will lead them out in round 1, HUGE Mistake, stevens was the choice for me!
No real suprises, geelong to it in again, St Kilda should do well if they can get over there under acheivement, hawthorn will make the 8 but not have a season like they did last year, i thin k Franklins inner demons will get the better of him, Freo should do well.
wallace will probably be the first sacked if we dont have a good start to the season.

Im predicting big things for my Hawks this year. If we can harness the Buddy/Williams forward line and have a good run with injuries the top 4 beckons. Equally hoping for a big Geelong hangover to last the entire season.
Good to see Paulie C you are still crapping on about the Buddy opium den. Expect a thread about him sometime again in July that you heard from a chick at a bahmitzvah that he and the rest of the Hawks are in the only for the thread to dissapear like the previous one/s.
Richmond will sack Terry Wallace in round 3 and appoint Kevin Sheedy.
My ladder
Hawthorn
meh who cares about the rest.....

| I don't follow AFL much but I started following Collingwood in Grade 2 so I guess they'll win every game of the season and finally get that damn cup. |

My top 8 (not necessarily in order, but pretty close to it)
Geelong - Premiers
Adelaide
Collingwood
Kangaroos
Port
Hawthorn
St Kilda
Sydney
Richmond wooden spoon.
Fremantle and Sydney will be less than 1 game separated 8-9 at the end of the season.
If Adelaide play Geelong in the GF they will lose by around 77 points (and I'm not just saying that because of last year).
Actually I have no idea, its still cricket season so footy won't get any attention from me until that ends. I have no idea how anyone apart from Port are looking. |

Yeah; that's ing stupid. |

How is that stupid?
Every player wants to be as good if not better than Judd, so why not make him the beacon for the younger kids (and certainly some of the older) to look up to. Which is what carlton has needed for years.
I feel for Stevo (as he has worked hard in the past few years) but its about whats best for the club not the player. |

Being a captain is more so about being well-known and respected within a club than being an exceptionally good player.
How can you lead a team if you don't know half the player's names? |

He's obviously impressed the leadership group over the summer, it's probably not that drastic (in terms of him not knowing anyone's names ;))but it could really go two ways. It will either work brilliantly, or if Judd fails to fire then it will be termed to fail miserably (and the media will have a field day with it, and it will be Denis Pagan Mk II). If Steven's was made captain and didn't fire then it probably wouldn't be something that would be focussed on as much because there is nowhere near the expectation on him.
With everything that happened under Denis Pagan, I honestly thought the last thing that Carlton would do would be to hand the captaincy to someone who is clearly not very 'Carlton' (because that was what everyone and anyone from inside the place who could get near a journalist at the end of last year was saying was wrong with Denis Pagan), but maybe Ratten has wised up and realized that if Carlton is going to go anywhere it's actually got to get over itself & start looking forward.
I hope not, because there's nothing I like better than seeing Carlton sitting at the bottom :haha: ;) |
