Dated 2005, theres actually a few interviews from that period where he mentions about how awesome ableton is for DJing, if i had more time i imagine i could find more

But yes Vdub is clearly a master of all

yes he does....the point being that the less u know about technology and current trends in a scene, u really shouldnt be talking out of ur ass

i know i wasnt there and all but to say that joel sucks or that he doesnt deserve to play in the main room is rather bullocks. i think its a great achievement for him and that he deserves it. to be from a particular area (in this case southern ontario) and to have become such a hit around the world, to be able to play in your local superclub mainroom (in which case is highly ranked) is like a violinist playing at carnegie hall.

mr mau5 is a producer first, then dj. im sure in time, he'll learn more the ropes of what to play etc to cater more to your needs. but from what ive heard from the majority, he did very well and pretty much everyone liked it (gino/commercial/hands in the air crowd or not).

anyhoo, thats the end of my little rant. live long and prosper

I don't usually post here but I did actually attend this show and need a outlet to express my opinion!

I got in about 12:30 AM and Deadmau5 was already spinning and I was actually impressed with what he was doing. I noticed some looping and layering, like just basically doing more than just playing one track after another so that was cool. My highlight was being on stage without a wristband as I had somehow slipped through the cracks and told Deadmau5 to play Morgan Page ft Jissie- Longest Road (Deadmau5 remix)...when he told me he only had the dub and not the vocal version! Ah well, it was still played, as long as the Chris Lake edit of Faxing Berlin which was nice.

I was disappointed with James Zabiela. He started off scratching and stuff in the beginning, and the first hour of his set was pure buildup which didn't really go anywhere after. The level of music which was being played was at the same level as Deadmau5 and I felt he should have kicked it up a notch. I also expected more effects to be dropped but it just seemed like a standard set...more progressive housey than usual though, which I haven't heard being done from James. I had to leave at 4 AM.

OH yeah, and the sound level was insanely LOUD! WTF is wrong with the Guv? Do they want everyone to go deaf? The only escape was near the front or the back, but everywhere else was too loud.

I HAVE SERIOUS VOLUME CONTROL ISSUES.

I have waited so long for the return of James and I was not let down by his performance. He did exactly what I expected of him….technical skills extraordinaire. His energy behind the decks has not changed and the vibe that he gives off remains the same. His style of music, I understand may not be accepted by a lot of people. I myself am not into breaks very much, but the way James mixes all sounds and styles and makes them work is why I love when he plays. He is a technical wizard in my opinion and I am always honoured to see him play.

Deadmau5 has never been one DJ that I would go out of my way to see play, however, I will give credit where credit is due. He got the crowd moving, bouncing, and built up the energy for James to play. I personally was not enjoying his track selection 100% of the time, but I did enjoy watching him play from the sidelines. Kudos to the Mau5 for your first gig in the Guvy main room.

But at least you still have to mix them....

The mix is the hardest part of DJing...track selection is second...

You cop out with a laptop and you've removed half of the work...

It's lazy and Absolutely if Sasha plays on a laptop he's less of a DJ...

That goes for anyone...

Thats when it leaves the DJ show and becomes a performance act...

I want to see DJ's....

One argument can be that beat matching is something I guess you can say out-dated, with vinyl you're trying to beat match for a while that you don't have time to sample another track, add a diff layer, play with some special effects doing something unique.

Kinda like how F1 racers don't use manual transmission anymore because it's human controlled, and slower. Now they use paddle shifting cause it's extremely faster to change gears, and easier to pull a paddle than to use your arm to change gears, as a result there's more time and focus on the task at hand, winning the race.

my take on it is this... make music, record music, play music, have fun, help others have fun.

not sure what you meant by "losing quality" when you play a CD... granted 99.9% of the tracks released in the last num,ber of god knows how many years were digitally produced albeit the mighty "render" at 24 / 16 bits... which gets transfered sample accurate to CD.. at... 16 / 44.1...

hey but thats cool, some guys like the sound of vynl, and thats pefectly fine too. whatever works for you.

im a technology guy myself... so as it becomes available, i exploit it by whatever means possible... everyones got their own way of doing things... but the argument parralell to "is it still cool to wash your clothes on a rock in the river...sure. just dont in on me coz i use a maytag" always managed to irk me a bit.

the lovely bit about ableton + other software is that its as simple.. or as complex and technically challenging as you want to make it.

for instance... yeah, in effect, you could load up 2 columns of tracks , add hitpoints, hit play, xfade, and voila.

of course to me, that'd be boring. sure it would probably sound fine... but some others (including james) also use laptops as an integral part of their DJ set.

my setups changing every month or so... new hardware comes out, new controllers, new software, etc etc... but ive found a fun little way of delivering a "quasi live" set by controlling various aspects over the Lemur / Monome 256 / EFX1000 / djm800 etc etc...

having something to "beatmatch for you" while your doing 5 other things at the same time at this point is pretty much a nescessity... then its all about grabbing loops, resequencing drum patterns, isolating tracks to route to external effects... it can get pretty nutty and fun.

do u use global quantizing or external triggering?
