I think someone should be a household name before being allowed to rip up the main room @ guv
I couldn't agree with you more about laptops. I realize these people have the skills but it still bothers me. I will never switch to serato etc.. it's just not the same. I give MO mad props for staying almost completely on vinyl. |
LOL u really think they were using timecode cds last night???
HAHAHAHAHAHA
if u want to be a purist, why dont u bitch at people using cds instead of vinyl too? thats pretty advanced nowadays too?
hell why dont u justify the use of 2 gramaphones instead? |

There will always be people who don't like it and people who will complain (they don't necessarily come in the same package).
Tape decks ftmfw. :toocool: |

VHS tapes for VJing ftw |
Haha - once I start playing, I'm definitely making a set from VHS tapes. At this rate I'll probably have to spend a hell of a lot of money though, they'll be antiques by then! :p |

hahah to be fair, deadmau5 is 10x the household name than J00F is! lol
So are you saying someone like Sasha is less of a DJ because he doesn't use CDJ's? Come on man, give me a ing break. |
I never said deadmau5 didn't deserve to be in the main room.. I just think they have loosened in general with who they let play in there.
As for laptops.. I don't think people that are established are less of a dj because they use them.. However, I think it definitely takes away from the style of the performance. |

I see where you're coming from, but I think there's a lot more potential in making interesting/unique mixes when laptops are used - especially when the performer has individual pieces of the tracks seperated (i.e. bass seperated from pads etc), since you never really know what to expect.
Edit: I don't seem to make much sense tonight after reading that over. Essentially, I find versatility and cleanliness in mixing much more important. |

CD's suck because you lose quality in the music...
But at least you still have to mix them....
The mix is the hardest part of DJing...track selection is second...
You cop out with a laptop and you've removed half of the work...
It's lazy and Absolutely if Sasha plays on a laptop he's less of a DJ...
That goes for anyone...
Thats when it leaves the DJ show and becomes a performance act...
I want to see DJ's....
And another thing...I want to get something straight...
I'm not taking anything away from Deadmau5 on is production ability...
If my own brother produced a great pop song that filled his performance schedule...I'd be proud...
But I wouldn't like the music and he sure as hell wouldn't belong in the Guvernment....
You want to see unique mixing....go watch Mark spin on a great night...and the only computer in his booth is the one for the lasers... |

Purist or not, if you don't like the music then you certainly shouldn't stick around. That's why I'll always check out the sets of a DJ before I go hear them for the first time. I knew what to expect with mau5' tracks because I've been hearing them on ASOTs, Menno De Jong's podcasts, and Tiesto's ISOS6. I like that juicy, bassy sound so I didn't need to d/l any sets. I had no idea what to expect from JZ but I was planning to leave the club early anyway so it was no biggy to me.
What's the elitest crap about who should play where?!?! WTF!!! LOL!! It's a simple question of supply and demand. Economics 101 anyone?
I think the Guv crew are doing a great job with the current talent pool (I haven't heard all the smaller names or gone to all the different rooms but I've always loved the Guv and KH bookings for LoL, Decadence, Anniversary parties, etc.) |

People need to go out more and see what happens for themselves instead of read on hear.
I can't wait for Deko-ze to spin the main room, just to see what happens. |

You realize J00F uses and endorses Ableton Live in many of his DJ sets... |
