As for technology...
Can you imagine if U2 all of a sudden dropped their instruments for a bunch of Mac's...
I'll put it like this...If they're a REALLY good DJ who doesn't mind EARNING the thousands that they get, then they'll actually mix tracks on 3 decks and still have the ability to add all kinds of effects on this and that and the other thing you nerds mentioned...

Haha, what? So because you want hard+fast beats, the DJ got it wrong? Playing hard and fast is an easy way out, an easy way to 'build' energy. It takes real skill to build a crowd with a lower BPM. I wish more DJs tried it, because its evident (and sometimes feels cheap) when a DJ just throws on a pounding song to build.
As for the comparison to U2...they play INSTRUMENTS not decks. If they started using computers instead of guitars, there should be public outrage. DJs mix, they do not strum. |

Had to do that a few weeks ago. Well said. |

Part of watching a DJ show is watching the DJ himself...working his ass off for his money...not just playing with a mouse and tweaking a knob here and there...I could just go and sit in a corner and close my eyes and get that show...
It's just not enough for me...All this technology has taken over the art of the mix...You're all forgetting that the mix is what it's always been about...Or maybe you just haven't been around long enough to ever have seen it for yourself... |
If a DJ is using Abelton to auto beat-match to two tracks then spends the rest of the time doing jesus-pose, then yes - they suck.
Now, if they are using the extra 'free time' to say - slice loops, isolate tracks, layer 3 or 4 or even more tracks together, trigger samples and other bits of trickery - then by all means, use Ableton.
You need to step out of the past - Digital DJing is still "DJing", and hell - its moving the DJ more from just a disk-jockey to more of a live-act *if* the DJ is leveraging the tools in new/unique/interesting ways.
But hey, dunno - I guess people like Richie Hawtin are not DJs and just hacks becuase they make heavy use of ableton?
Laptops / controllers / etc are becoming an increasingly needed tool in any "real" DJs set IMO - if all your doing is beatmatching two records then your being lazy.
Maybe you should check out Mutek sometime - you'll notice a trend of just about /everyone/ useing Laptops in their sets in some way and Vinyl is getting increasingly rare. You are not earning any "cred" by trying to come off as a vinyl purist. Ableton when used well can add a whole new level / layer to a good set. |
