i'd get the canon g9/g10 in a heartbeat, but only because i already have a compact. the g series is really big (nowhere as insane as walking around with an slr though - unless i'm getting paid i'm never doing that again)

Nikons all the way

My sister has the 880 and I absolutely love it. Awesome camera. They improved some interface things that sucked on the 870. Like they ditched the touch sensitive wheel. They added the ability to scroll through your pictures quite fast with an actual scroll wheel which is AWESOME.

my sony cyber sucks...I have this one. I fuking hate the flash.

but thankfully I've finally upgraded to the Nikon coolpix S60 touch screen. :D

I personally think the best Canons are the pro digital cams. I have a non digital one I bought back in HS for photography class and it was awesome esp dark room pix.

So I can assume that the video quality would be just as good if not better for loud shows?

Just get a DSLR.

Fail. DSLR vs Point and shoot doesn't even work. They are targeted at two TOTALLY different scenarios, type of people, etc. You don't carry a DSLR in your pocket for random .
