Duh, i know what it refers to, but i didn't ask you the question. I just think it's a stupid term that lumps together an enormous amount of dissimilar artists and styles of music. Just take The Beatles, Led Zeppeling and Pink Floyd that were mentioned in this thread as an example, they sound nothing alike. It's not the most enlightened persons who use the term, like the poster he replied to, and yet he tried to make some stupid point comparing whatever music it is he likes to "classic rock". |

Isn't it obvious that music is not a game or a competitive sport? Isn't it obvious that Italy is the reigning soccer world champion? Isn't it obvious that saying more people like jazz than trance is absolutely ridiculous? |

I think there are enough TA's who also like rock or other genres. But if I'm asked for my favourite I would say it is Trance. I also like U2, A-ha, Pet Shop Boys, Level42, Bon Jovi, Tears for Fears, Genesis, Franky Goes To Hollywood.

That's tricky, you cannot measure taste, but you can count goals and chess wins. Comparing Jazz with Trance says more about the taste of people than something about which is best. If I would says Jazz is better because it exists longer that also has some truth in it.
That the most sold US car is a Ford F150 doesn't make this car the best. I actually is a piece of ... according to our British Top Gear friends..... |

And here I thought you were civil. Perhaps you'd like to enlighten on why my point was stupid. I wasn't comparing my music to classic rock. There are many people who like 'classic rock' and state that as their favorite genre. Who cares what the exact definition is. Music and appreciation of anything is subjective. Pretentious lyrics as one poster said does not command, DEmand or even interest me into finding the deeper meaning. I'm not sure why it's hard to understand that a majority preference does not = something being better. It just means more people like it.
To ME, trance/house is the best music. To others it's not. Anyone stating one music is better than another it is just an opinion. Talk about popularity all you want though. |

You're talking about different things. There's an obvious, undisputed, and clear standard in soccer and chess: whether one side outscores / defeats the other one. That isn't the case in music.

All this means is that trance is "better" at being popular. If your standard is mere popularity, then artists like Soulja Boy and Britney Spears kick any trance artist's ass. Does that mean you think that Soulja Boy and Britney Spears are "better" than trance? I certainly hope not.

"argumentum ad populum" kid. What most people like/support/believe doesn't mean that its better or correct. This is why (as JBJ noted) Britney Spears and 50 Cent don't represent the best of what modern music has to offer. Cool?
In musical terms though, Jazz can clearly be considered superior to trance-or any other form of EDM for that matter- because it involves a higher amount of musicianship, that is, the musical complexity of jazz is far superior (well it can't even compare) to trance. The same goes for "classic rock" (this term is not good since there were about one hundred different rock genres-or more- in total during the 50s, 60s and 70s. I mean Pink Floyd were a space/prog rock band, Led Zep were more proto-metal/hard-rock with a progressive hint etc.) This also doesn't mean that jazz or classic rock is better then trance bacause music is about personal/subjective preference and not about the objective rating of a product's craftsmanship (although this factor can be taken into account when one's judges the aesthetic qualities of music). Both Jazz and Classic rock are technically superior to trance, but which one is better is left to every single human being on earth to decide.
