Do you people honestly, seriously have that much trouble spelling all of these words? I mean, how did you graduate from high school, let alone university?
I can understand the license/offense/defense/practise one. Those are the American spellings, but the problem is that both the Americans and British messed it all up. All of those words can be nouns or verbs, and it was originally supposed to be that the "s" version was the verb and the "c" version was the noun. Jamie pointed this out way up above, but the problem is, it's not true anymore; licenced and licencing are both in the dictionary. To make matters worse, in some cases the distinction still exists everywhere, as in advise/advice.
What's particularly confusing about those ones is that you have some very similar words like service and notice that are spelled the same everywhere and never had the "s" variant, and derivative words like malpractice that don't have the "s" variant anywhere. Oh, and other derivative words like sublicense that don't have the "c" variant anywhere. So we're supposed to write licence, unless somebody has no licence, in which case it's unlicensed.
The whole thing is kind of a disgusting mess, which is why everyone except English professors tends to accept either spelling. |

Don't be bitter. One has to draw the line somewhere between the common "human" mistakes, like definately or occurence, and the "i never lernd hoe 2 fuking spel" mistakes like tierd or wensday.
What are they teaching kids in school these days? When I was in elementary school we had spelling tests, and words like receive were usually the first ones on them. By the time I got to high school they wouldn't even fail you for a misspelling like that, they'd just punt you straight in the nuts. |

I agree... By the time I was in highschool if you couldn't spell there was a big problem.
There are a couple words I know that I have to be careful with (ie. Convenience)but Im very conscious of them.
I honestly think my biggest problem is 'typos'. I think faster than I type and I can be a clumsy typer. |

i have never in my life spelled "apparently" correctly. Even now. Had to check.
The other word is "conscience" because it looks nothing like you actually say it. |
