You can be born into an X family and feel like you're totally not part of it. You can be part of some social/religious class or demographic, and yet resent it and try to leave it for some other social group.
Same with lifestyles. |
:stongue:
Way to backpedal on the assumption bus.
Par for the course from HTP yet again. Idiot. |

I understand. It must be tiring to constantly be surrounded by people profoundly more intelligent than you.
I imagine you're exhausted most days. |

Manhattan is overrated as a place to live IMO. |
Although you're painting with a rather broad brush, I have to generally agree with you.
I'll begin with a topic relevant to this site - clubbing. Maybe I'm jaded because I was fortunate to experience pre-Giuliani NYC nightlife (in the 90's), but partying in the city is rarely fun for me anymore. It's all about bottle service and the bull that goes with it. There are a few exceptions but generally all of the clubs are a bunch of St. Tropez wannabees, and they all fail.
Some are actually decent for a few months but then lose their vibe entirely when they start to let people buy their way in.
Another facet of New York that is over-rated, in my opinion, is the singles scene. There's a very prevelant belief out there that it is awesome to be single in NY. That's bull. I've never lived in a tougher city to meet women that I want to date.
Additionally the rents are disgustingly expensive.
Now, as for the mindset of its 20something inhabitants - the subject of this thread - trust me: it is very, very easy to get caught up in the glamour that exists in Manhattan, and to want the things that the people around you have. You are the neighbors of the most privilged people on the planet - what is un-natural about women wanting to look like the models they see on the street, or guys wishing that they could eat at the expensive restaurants that are all over the place? Those kind of things can really get to you in Manhattan. You truly have to be mature and have a level head, otherwise you may often be unhappy. Being well-travelled helps, since it helps give perspective on how much more fortunate you are than most people on the planet.
Given all that negativity, NY obviously has its upsides, amoung which I include the food, the arts, and the professional opportunities if you are willing to work for them (especially if you can work off of a connection). |

That's me right now. I got a job in NYC and live in NJ but i'm slammed with loans. I might move down with my parents in NC just so i can start saving money. |
ouch...
but saving money is important. i would miss you though if you left. |

That whole mindset is another thing that makes me dislike the place. |

this reminds me of a great article I read recently on wine tasting. In blind tests where the tastes were told nothing but the price, the "more expensive" wine always rated better, even if it was in fact the same wine in two samples. |

manhattan is very overrated. there's still fun to be had in the east village though
williamsburg is too :( i still manage to have a good time though
i rarely go 'clubbing'. i have a few little spots and nights around the boroughs that i frequent and that's it.
i live in a tiny almost monastic cell of an apartment with my dj equipment, overdue library books, and a bunch of unfinished tracks
i don't need much to live on, i don't buy expensive things, and i generally tend to be repulsed by them anyways. if i buy a new article of clothing it's from a thrift shop. there's nothing i'd rather be doing than eating my falafel-a-day while browsing new releases on someone else's internet connection
i've met so many ridiculous people and have had so many amazing experiences since i moved that I don't regret it in any way. as an intern architect, freelance designer, and active partygoer it's a pretty good place to be, even though the music scene is spotty at best these days. would i rather be in barcelona or berlin?
of course
waiting for that degree before i move out though |

I should have been more specific. I meant to say, for the price you really pay to live in Manhattan (ridiculous rent, absurdly high NY state and NYC income taxes and other expenses), it's really not worth it living in Manhattan unless you got connections. The only advantage you get for that high of a price is that you can get back to your place after partying and crash faster. Seriously you're better off just living in the surrounding areas (even NJ...at least you're getting a nice fat refund come tax season :p) and just commute in. |
