Weather you will admit it or not, WHEN it came out, at the time, there was nothing else like it on the market. And this is coming from a PC gamer (I've given away my PS3 and 360 to family members).
From the graphics, the excellent co-op gameplay, the AI, the vehicles...on all aspects it offered a venue different from anything before.
Sure prior PC shooters like Unreal and the Quake series were great in their own right, but this was different. Not every FPS has to be a lightning fast, twitch shooter.
I should add, that although I enjoyed HALO when it came out very much, I lost interested after that. I bought Halo 2 on launch day (my b-day I think it was), played it for half an hour and never again after that. The gameplay seemed to have gotten even slower (too slow, jumping was like you were on the moon), plus the PC had better offerings already. |

Halo is the Tiesto or Paul van Dyk of first person shooters - it panders to the lowest common denominator so it can be accessible to all, but there is very, very little below the surface.
It's a shallow game with no story, no depth, horrible FPS mechanics, bland environments, boring weapons, sub-par graphics, absolutely wretched animations... the list could go on forever. The game is an absolute pile of , and the only reason it does so well is because meatheads and idiots who like bands like Godsmack and epitomize "herd mentality" can "get it" (due to it's accessibility) and instantly think it's gods gift to gaming because they simply have no comparative standards what-so-ever.
Halo is the ugly fat girl that your idiot roommate nailed, yet still thinks is worthy of bragging about.
And you know what level is more fun than "assault on the control room"?
Every single level in Goldeneye for Nintendo 64. |
z0MG!!1 BUT HALO STARTED DUAL WEILDING IN FPS'SS

Half Life came out in 1998 or 1999. Way before Halo and it did EVERYTHING better. AI, level design, pacing, fun factor, etc etc etc. I won't even talk about multiplayer because it would be unfair. |

you're either pro or you're noob.
you know what really blew me away? half-life. and there were half-life mods with dual wielding weapons before halo was released.
also, unreal tournament.
when i played halo for pc i felt like i was playing every other shooter i had ever played, except underwater. yes; it was like running underwater.
the only thing close to shooters that i enjoy on consoles are the 3rd person games where you have a bit more interactivity with things and some fancy features like ducking around corners or shooting over the edge of a wall. MGS, Gears of War...i could never play those games on pc. |

| Problem here is, you had high expectations going in. It took quite some time for Halo to appear on PC. By that time, the hype was RIDICULOUS. I don't blame you for eating into it. If you wouldn't have, there'd be no reason for you to play the title, correct? |

Yes, except that none of them were interesting to begin with. I have yet to see any WW2 shooter worthy of mention. And yes - that includes the overhyped and hyper-generic call of duty series. Fun gameplay for a couple of hours, but that's it. No originality, no depth, no replay value. |
somebody never played 8v8 @ LANs, coz CoD + expansion were anything but generic. and actually, if you compare the first CoD to all the other shooters on the market at the time, there was simply nothing like it. |

Likely story. ;)
And to that response you'd say something along the lines of: "Believe what you want. I'm not lying."
We all feed in to the hype. Nothing to be embarrassed about. |

A Halo argument is hard to pan out, mainly because both sides of the camp have good points.
Halo did things no other (console) shooter had really done, such as large-scale battles, where one would hop into a jeep, wage war in an open field, then, in the same level, go inside a giant structure and continue the fight. The seamless transition between the two settings made for quite a long stage that either ended up being a) largely exciting or b) boring and monotonous as hell.
The storyline I never really paid attention to, so I'll skip that one.
The multiplayer was the main deal. Forget PC and LAN's, were talking consoles here, and no other FPS (or game for that matter) had such a huge setup for massive amounts of fun on a home gaming system. College dorm rooms, internet cafes, and the often aggrivating procedure of bringing Xbox's to one house all led to a good time with you and 15 of your buddies. That was a big number to be had in one game back in 2001.
Some people speak of the overall accessibily of Halo as being the sole reason the game sucks serious ass, while others will speak that its the main reason the game is brilliant; anyone can play it, and yes, it is possible to get really good at it. Calling the game "skill-less" only means you didn't play anyone that was truly good; the tourneys both EB Games and VGB Games (a now-defunct online video game tourney organization) used to hold kicked your ing ass with the competition you were up against. I only played in one, and I made that my only one, despite the fact that I thought I was really good (were talking Halo 1 here, btw).
Overall, the game is not all that people hype it up to be, but its my favorite multiplayer FPS, by far. I'm talking the original, the very first, the holy Halo 1. 2 and 3 were marginal improvements that simultaneously took away some of the aspects that made Halo 1 the dream-game that it was...
...but please, don't get me started on Halo's single player game. Atrocious, terrible, awful, waste of time, useless...any of those words can describe the hypnotically boring level designs and ultimately unfun campaign that I never actually finished, despite years of playing multi.
Sorry for the long Halo-related post...despite it being off-topic, there is such a thing as thread evolution, where people might talk about things other than what the thread starter intended. That's my excuse, at least. :)
Oh yeah, Diablo 3. |
