sounds like prog to me at least
it's the lead and bassline above anything. sounds just like a probspot production. Also the percs are very standard prog patterns and samples.
but i call most 'melodic techno' prog, that is techno which puts melody above atmosphere and of course rhythm. sing along techno. (or unicorn techno?)
progressive generally means to take the genre and dilute it with other ideas, and since techno is by its nature non-melodic, and this is quite melodic (harmonized bassline, trancey emo lead)
here are some examples of things i would call 'techno' (non prog)

it's funny i was going to make a thread called 'unicorn techno/prog techno' as this melodic stuff seems to really be catching on and drawing in all of the ex-prog heads
techno is abstraction. 'melody' is figural, the antithesis of abstraction.
basically if these were paintings, dub techno would be something like mark rothko, minimal techno might be like kazimir malevich, some kinds of techno would be more like futurist paintings (eg giacomo balla), atmospheric techno might be more cubist, and some techno would be straight up mondrian
prog, on the other hand, would be the equivalent of impressionism or figurative realism in some cases, using real world instruments or figural melodies - there's no abstraction, melody is melody, voice is voice. an apple looks like an apple |

but it's not, because neither lawrence or superpitcher have ever made progressive. I'm pretty sure of this, I've been a fan of pitchey since he released 'heroine' and it sounds like a lovely morning in berlin...

i don't know that it's up to the artists to determine the genre :haha:
i mean they're just making music, and that's what they should be doing. i would hope they don't say, 'hey let's make a prog track'
calling it prog or techno is not by any means a judgment statement from me, i just want to call it what it is (IMO), and in general i would say this sample has much more in common with what i call 'prog' than what i call 'techno'.
and i think superpitcher and kompakt in general have always been on the progressive fringe of techno :)
i mean i have a lot of lawrence's discog, and he definitely mostly makes straight up atmospheric techno, but I think this one is prog, arrived at from the techno side, and that's probably superpitcher's doing.

If you look back at the history of electronic dance music (and probably most music), you can see that each era has its own 'prog' response. With the resurgence of techno in the past few years, you are starting to see a new kind of prog techno everywhere.
The funny thing is, it's mostly the people who were really into prog trance first, then prog house who are now into this prog techno :), and it's the same artists who stay in this prog loop. |
