i thought thematically and stylistically they were similar, except lost in translation gets better and better with repeat viewings and garden state gets worse and worse
the best criticism i've heard of garden state (which i will note ruined the movie for me the next time i saw it and i haven't bothered to see it again since) was that the movie completely relies on the music for its emotion. it doesn't come from the acting or the dialog or anything. that movie is only good because of the soundtrack. and while the soundtrack is phenomenal, it just doesn't hold up for that long.
and lost in translation is just ing amazing. |

| Eh, you have to admit that Lost In Translation is incredibly soundtrack-centric as well. Even more so than Garden State, I think, since it has much less dialog. |

There's a lot more visually interesting about Lost in Translation. It's what isn't said that makes that movie. |

i don't think so actually. i just typed out a longer post but my computer blows and firefox crashed.
both movies were written and directed by relatively young actors/actresses, both had amazing soundtracks.
garden state relied on the soundtrack for its emotion, and in my opinion lost in translation uses the soundtrack to add to the emotion already created by the mise en scene, cinematography, and dialog. i think that if you took out the soundtracks and replaced them with original scores, garden state would be relatively boring pretentious and scatter-brained, and lost in translation would still hold up ok, though admittedly not quite as well. still just look at posts in this thread, people remember scenese in garden state by the song that was playing in the scene ;) |

what's wrong with using the soundtrack to inspire emotion? i think musical direction is pretty important in movies.
i think the relevance to our generation and being able to relate to the characters and situations also played a pretty large role in why people think the movie is good. who doesn't like a movie they can relate to?
i haven't seen Lost In Translation since it came out, and i remember not caring for it much when i did see it, so i can't really speculate on the similarities or differences. |
