Hated it. It was trying too hard to be artsy.

:wtf:

Out of curiosity, how was it trying to be arty? I didn't see anything arty at all about Garden State, in fact just the opposite - I thought it was trying to be a film that a fair number of average people could relate to.

Loved it - in my top 5 for sure.

Natalie? She will be mine.

Zach? He wrote/directed/acted in it, so props for the great project. I think it's a little unfair to compare Zach to Sophia Coppola.

All in all, great story and well casted. The music is excellent .

The characters are relatable, the story both sad and heartwarming and, for whatever other reasons, I just love it.

I love when he shoots the arrow in the air and it lands beside Natalie, prompting the ear tug. Hilarious.

Good chemistry between those two, too.

Halloween '06 was fun

Why does everyone think Lost In Translation is by Wes Anderson? lol You're like the 8th person I've seen make that mistake Rob.

Also, I like it much more than Garden State.

I don't get that either. Or why I've seen people call it "pretentious."

"Pretentious" has a specific meaning and isn't merely another synonym for "bad" or "uninteresting" or "not very likable," but I've seen a number of people using it that way lately.

Don't you think that it can carry negative connotations, though, if someone just shuns pretentiousness in general?

:conf:

I'm referring specifically to dictionary.com definition #2 - the one regarding self-importance.

I just hate that Zach Braff wrote his own love story and then cast Natalie Portman. I wanna do that.

Mega.

Side note: I know I've already mentioned this once in this thread, but does anyone else just generally find her to be a pretty bad actress?

:conf:

I mean, not terrible - I don't know, I just don't think she's particularly great either.

Maybe Star Wars just ruined her for me. :(

It definitely has a negative connotation. But that doesn't make it an accurate descriptor for giving a negative opinion about any old thing.

I can see people making reasonable criticisms of the movie, but "self-important" or "pretending to sophistication (pretentious)" don't strike me as very accurate or relevant at all, which is why I'm wondering if people can elaborate on those...

I'm trying to think of where I liked her, not just cause she was mothering adorable, but theres really nothing where she's ever been better than "ok".
