God, reading this rips my heart out.....
Cant believe I'm not planning this one. But after reading all these posts, it warms me to know how much my input is wanted, so thank you.
I guess my 'life's mission' to see Chicane live before I die took priority this time. I'm going to Poland Aug 8-17, seeing him the 14th. There's no way I'd have the $ or time to get to TO that soon after.
Anyways.... what you'll need:
-a location (large yard, or street w/cool neighbors and not overpopulated)
-a crew of people willing to help (set up/ during/ breakdown)
-DJ lineup (lord knows you'll not be short of requests ;) )
-rentals of music gear
-rentals of gear from Absolute Location (416-203-8332)- tents, coolers, tables, chairs, potties/urinals, cable mats, extension cords, garbage bins, industrial size grill, etc...
If going the street permit route, its good to get an early start, the 1st year I think I had 2 weeks notice and they gave it to me, surprisingly. Last year I did it in 4 weeks, and I had to hound them down to remind them to approve it. If going the block party route, you'll need $100-some for the insurance (as long as u say there wont be any alcohol there), and about $60 for the street permit. The clincher is the rentals. Potties, the grill, and tents aren't exactly cheap... the rest of the stuff is affordable. They will deliver and pick up. I managed to get a good deal on the Absolute rentals cuz I worked for the company, but even with the discount it was over $1000 (so imagine it without the discount). My old contact isn't even there any more, but I can see if I can get a discount or not (i can guarantee it wont be major, since I wont even be there, and they'll know it).
I also considered doing it on the island one year. Seemed like a pain, and u had to deal with noise police as well, and felt like a bit more red tape/ restrictions, since you were on public parkland. Langley was too easy of a location to get to and stick to. I know Tribe manages to do it every year, I'd email AlexD for tips on that.
If I were coming back for this to help plan, I'm sure I could swing a neighbor to do the permit, but if I'm not, I dont know if I could convince anyone, really. (Lisa- talk to Stephanie? lol).
And even if you do this in someone's yard, its a good idea to flyer your neighbors a nice letter in advance letting them know your plans, what hours the music is running to/from (cut off at 11pm), and invite them by to be courteous (most wont even come).
Hope that helps, would be glad to offer any further advice. |

Well there goes my hope of ya bein here. But trust when I say that whatever happens, you'll be top of mind.
Thanks for the tips... I'll allocate a couple hours tomorrow to get moving on those fronts w/ Absolute for price quote reasons. All it means is getting up a couple hours earlier to get my morning stuff out of the way & passing off some admin work.
As to those with large yards.... where are ya??!?! lol. Do we even have any of those in Toronto? |

I figure a committee approach would work better... shares the work load & will really help with the brainstorming side of things in this initial phase.
Hence my thoughts behind a cheap pints & patio meeting with those that really want to get involved. |

I have kept quiet so far because I know I don't have time to be a part of this BUT if we can get some boards for the floor then this space is available....
Our new back yard. Queen and Pape :) |

| Ya, if anyone wants to come throw a party in our yard here in N. Ireland, you'll all more than welcome!!! Big yard, and a couple cows as backyard neighbors. Although it wouldnt be much of an 'end of summer' thing- summer never really came to this freakin place, and it'd be hard to get back to TO for the LoL party, lol. |

Congrats indeed!!!!
Awesome! Well, that's certainly one option.
Keep me/us posted as to whether it's fully viable, b/c a private venue resolves a whole host of planning issues, & the cost of dropping in sheets of plywood shouldn't be horrendous.
What are the dimensions of that lovely space you've got there? |
