Who cares - Is it that bad to have a little favoritism towards your country?

It isn't bad for the announcers to show a little favoritism if they don't mind losing credibility. :p

although they do keep saying the start values are higher for the chinese athletes which explains the scores.

he's been around olympics gymnastics long enough to know what he's doing. sorry you're wrong.

They wouldn't even show the opening ceremonies live and you say it's excellent?!? It's a ing travesty that they wouldn't show the ceremonies live and forced us to see the tape delay. Over the years, I got so fed up with dealing with tape delayed events and too many ing interest stories that it nearly killed my interest in the Olympics. For these olympics, I just watched the TV coverage to see Phelps and that's it. A

lso, having the swimming and gymnastics events live for 2 times zones and having them tape delayed on the west coast? That's just a travesty right there.

The NBC Olympic website is also a joke. It's confusing to navigate. Also, if you want to find a video clip you want to see? HAH! You'll have better luck good luck trying to find a video clip that you want to see.

Unfortunately, NBC has gotten great ratings and they sure as hell won't change their ass backwards way. Hell, with the way NBC is going, I seriously wouldn't be surprised if the swimming finals in London would be near midnight local time there just to get the events on prime time for the viewers on the US Eastern Time zone.

Having said that....

I seriously never though I'd live to see the day when I compliment NBC with anything regard to the olympics, but here it goes:

The only thing NBC has done well this year is their live streaming of the events. Silverlight has been extremely reliable and the quality is great. I like their minimal approach and having no audio commentators even though it can be confusing for some events like air pistol and sailing.

you may not like those human interest stories but they connect viewers with those competiting. lets be real close to 95% of people watching the olympics know nothing about those competiting. it gives you a little background on athletes, their sport and country which i think is great. you are a super sports fan while many people are not and those human interest pieces compel interest.

as for tape delay...it had to be shown in primetime. 08.08.08 at 8pm is easy enough for a 4 year old to remember. if nbc showed that live do you think it would have gotten the ratings it got? the olympics is just about making money as it is about athletics. if you were visa would you pay $x for air time marginally people would see? from a business standpoint it makes absolutely no sense to show it on nbc live on a weekday.

as for doing a great job, i cannot complain. the people reporting on the sports generally sound knowledgeable and add to the quality of the broadcast. the interviews are decent and bob costas has been doing a solid job on primetime. what else do you expect from an event literally taking place half a day ahead of us on the east coast?

anyway, 2010 in vancouver should be interesting for us in north america.

The Olympics come every 2 years?

In relation to your complaints regarding live broadcasts, why does it bother you that it's not live?

I don't really care about watching something delayed, as long as the delay is short enough that I haven't had some other way to inadvertently learn the results (i.e 4 hours).

winter. summer.

in relation to the live comment, nbc advertised the 7 pm eastern opening ceremony broadcast as live... unfortunately it had happened 12 hours earlier.

I don't watch their television coverage (why put up with all the bull?), but I've found the coverage on their website to be pretty good. The fact that it generally has no audio commentary is a nice bonus, and I can watch the events I'm actually interested in, which seem to be quite different from the events they typically put on TV (e.g. swimming, diving, gymnastics -- wtf is this ?)

NBC just overplays this tactic to death. Sure, I don't mind the occasional story, but I despise the fact that I've seen more of those stories that actual events throughout the years.

It could and should have been shown live on one of the NBC cable channels and in prime time for everyone else.

Considering that people were watching bootleg feeds in the US and a small number of people in the US had access to CBC live, the ratings would be comparable based on the buzz that was built.

olympics is about selling ad money and who is going to pay top dollar for a commercial few people are going to watch?

May as well make some extra revenue from the live broadcast on a cable channel.

You're assuming just live only. Again, it would have been just as good to show it live on one of their cable channels and then on prime time on NBC.

Except NBC holds the rights for broadcasting those games.

I don't want to waste my time of watching of an event when I can easily look up in 2 seconds. I also don't want to deal with the hassle of trying to shield myself from the results.

Personally, I much rather check live scores on my phone than recording the event and watching it hours later.

you mentioned cbc. They tend to show everything live, in NYC i know you can get it.
