yeah, dudes, kids who started gymnastics before they could walk, and do you know how demanding and focused chinese people are? those "kids" probably had absolutely no social life - gymnastics, eat a little, sleep a little, more gymnastics.

NBC announcers are so biased but those are the Americans for you. The best was in one of Phelps races, they zoomed in on his reaction of winning gold as soon as he touched the wall rather than show who came in 3rd for the bronze. And the gymnastic announcers are just as biased, saying only the Americans are getting robbed. Whatever, at least the judges aren't as biased as that. Credit to all the girls who won.

it is ok if other countries have other ways of raising children. What is right to you may not be ok to someone else on the other side of the globe. Asians in general are pushed hard yes, but look at the results it gets. I am not only talking about sports here.

That's ridiculous.

That's like saying you'd prefer to look up the ending of a movie on the internet rather than see it; the enjoyment is all in the process of watching it, not seeing the end.

Sports are meant to be seen live. Movies are not.

here's hoping ESPN/ABC, Fox or CBS can wrestle away the olympic rights from NBC in the US:

NEW YORK--Expect ESPN to be in the game for the 2014 and 2016 Games.

ESPN chief George Bodenheimer said ESPN/ABC will be in on the bidding process for the 2014 Winter Games and 2016 Summer Games, when the International Olympic Committee begins the auction process over the next year.

Bodenheimer, speaking at kickoff media event here for the Monday Night Football franchise, said ESPN/ABC was “very interested” in the future Olympics rights, although he cautioned that it “still has to make business sense” for the sports giant to make a bid.

Bodenheimer -- who noted that ESPN already has a relationship with the IOC through the company’s coverage of the Games on its Brazilian networks and through its bid on the last round of U.S. TV rights -- gave thumbs up to NBC’s multiplatform presentation of the Beijing Olympics, as it mirrors the multiplatform tack ESPN embarked on more than a decade ago.

“It validates the belief we had 10 years ago or more that sports fans are not just enjoying sports on television,” Bodenheimer said.

Bidding for the 2014 Games from Sochi, Russia and the 2016 Summer Olympics will likely unfold over the next six to nine months, according to ESPN officials. A firm deadline is expected by October 2009, when the IOC determines whether Rio de Janiero, Madrid, Tokyo or Chicago will host the 2016 Games.

Given NBC Universal’s ratings and digital-media success with the current Games, which held an $894 million rights fee, the bidding will likely surpass the $1 billion mark, a floor ESPN is bracing for.

“If I was holding the auction, I would definitely want to hold it after this Olympics,” said ESPN vice president of content John Skipper.

In addition to ESPN/ABC, News Corp. and CBS could join NBCU, which holds the U.S. rights to the 2010 Games in Vancouver and 2012 Olympics in London, in bidding for the 2014 and 2016 quadrennial events.

ESPN officials said the IOC has assured them that the incumbent does not hold the right for first negotiations and there will not be preemptive bidding for the package.

If ESPN/ABC were to secure the rights to the future Games, it would proceed differently than NBCU has in at least one regard: West Coast residents would not be held back from viewing top events like NBC did with Michael Phelps’s record-breaking swims until primetime arrived in the Pacific time zone.

“We would never put an event on tape delay. When we put 'live' on the screen, we mean 'live right now.' We don't mean live three hours ago,” said Skipper.

He said “the unnecessary manipulation” of events for ratings purposes is a disservice to sports fans, who expect information as soon as events occur. “You can cume an audience anytime, whether during the day or overnight.”

i really don't understand the strong feelings against nbc and the tape delay. depending on the location of the Games there will be tape delays. if i'm not really a fan of a particular sport no way i'm going to watch a stream in the middle of the day or will i stay up until 2am on a weekday to watch it.

if trampoline and diving weren't on primetime chances are close to zero i wouldn't watch. also the ioc did a decent job trying to get some sports live (like swimming or beach volleyball) so north americans could watch live. that shows effort to appease the broadcast partners. either way i have no problem with nbc and if i remember correctly i like their telecast of the torino Games over cbs' in lillehammer...taking new technology out of the question and purely anchors and coverage

It's not bias, we just don't give a about any of the swimmers except Phelps. It is swimming after all, the sport only gets attention once every four years and only then if the US has some great swimmer expected to win multiple golds

Here is my issue with it. If major events like races that Phelps or Bolt were in are on in the middle of the day and I'm at home watching the Olympics, why shouldn't they be showing me those races? They can still slice and dice their footage and replay the races in prime time just like they do now, but to me it is ridiculous that I have NBC on and they are showing some horse women's water polo match between loser country A and loser country B while Bolt is running the 200m and I have to get on nbcolympics.com to get the results instead of seeing it live. 95% of people can't watch when these events are live anyway so they will still get their prime time audience, but if I do happen to be home and watching they can at least break in to their live coverage of whatever sport is on so I can see the 200m world record get broken when it happens not 8 hours later.

the best was the swimming relay that the announcer said he was crunching numbers for two weeks and there was no way the US would win. it was hilarious that:
1. wtf numbers are you crunching?
2. two weeks? are you f'n serious? it's a swimming race not a trip to the moon
3. the US actually won
