Unfortunately, the only evidence I've seen of drug costs in a legal v. illegal situation is with herb, and as far as that goes - it's near exactly the same price for good weed illegally as it is legally, and in some cases, it's actually more expensive to purchase legally than illegally.

True, but that is because legal herb is still a small scale thing. I think this problem would go away if the majority of drugs were legal the same way alcohol is. In order to get rid of black market competition the government would have to sell drugs at fair market value, not black market value. They couldn't sell coke for $180 a ball or street dealers would just undercut them to $150 because they could still make money. There comes a point where the price will drop enough to where it no longer becomes worth a person's while to risk jail to traffic drugs and the black market would disappear. The government could grant large scale contracts for the production of drugs to corporations which would be able to supply them at much lower prices than current drug producers can. This is what happened with alcohol, when prohibition ended and large, efficient distilleries and breweries started making alcohol again the bootleggers went away.

I can only speak for marijuana, but it's because growing good pot is time consuming and costly, and not everyone can do it.

It takes talent and dedication to do it well - most people who grow realize rather quickly that if you're just doing it "to get high", you've invested in a pointless battle.

I think you would see numbers of addictions rise initially then curb and eventually drop off. After time, I think addiction rates to most drugs would be comparable to alcohol addictions. But once you've removed the taboo from the substance, it become something to try, and sometimes use with friends or alone instead of something nefarious to abuse.

Prohibition also killed off most good American beer allowing those breweries that stayed open by selling near beer to take over and flood the market with their that remains the most popular to this day. Pisses me right off even though I can't even drink alcohol.

Thank god for being born and raised in Wisconsin. :happy2:

Nothing even remotely like that has ever been a problem here. :p

It it were legal though you could grow pretty damn good marijuana outside in your yard that would yield maybe up to a pound per plant. And if a lot of people were doing that then it would be dirt cheap for good marijuana.

No, it wouldn't. It doesn't work that way.

The reason anheuser-busch and coors beers are so popular is because they stayed open during prohibition selling near beer. Then after prohibition was repealed they had the capital to suppress smaller breweries. s

You're entitled to your own opinion but a lot of people grow awesome bud outside. I know the Mexican strains can get up to 2m which is a lot of weight. My best friend has an associates in horticulture so I'm sure between the both of us we could be pulling down quite a few pounds.

Oh I never said they would allow it. I just said if people could freely grow it on a large scale on their property the prices would definitely come down.
