The 17-year-old unwed daughter of John McCain’s new running mate, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, is five-months pregnant, Palin and her husband, Todd Palin, said Monday in a written statement.

McCain’s campaign told FOX News that the presumptive Republican presidential candidate knew about Bristol Palin’s pregnancy before he chose Palin as his running mate last Friday, and that Bristol is planning to marry the father of her child.

“We have been blessed with five wonderful children who we love with all our heart and mean everything to us,” the Palins said in the statement. “Our beautiful daughter Bristol came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We’re proud of Bristol’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents. As Bristol faces the responsibilities of adulthood, she knows she has our unconditional love and support.”

The Palins asked the media to respect their family’s privacy.

“Bristol and the young man she will marry are going to realize very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family. We ask the media to respect our daughter and Levi’s privacy as has always been the tradition of children of candidates.”

it also reinforces the wonderful commitment to the religious values. isn't premarital sex frowned upon by religious conservatives?

Lebezniatnikov,

I wasnt aware that it had been posted on the GOP thread, I apologize.

jerZ07002,

Well this is an issue that its common among many Americans. This story can resemble the lives and stories of many women around the country. What it is so beautiful about this story is that the girl didnt abort the baby. She is being responsible for her own actions and she is not seeing this as a "burden" if not as a "blessing" she could have taken the easy way and just have had an abortion.

This should serve an example to many young girls around the country to be responsible for their own actions. I admire Palins daughter for her choice.

True, we should have more unwanted pregnancies in political office!

I can respect someone for the decision not to have an abortion, however, I can also understand a decision to abort a baby. Some people don't have as a backstop a mother who has all the economic benefits that accrue to someone on a presidential ticket. An abortion is also not 'the easy way' - there are definite and severe emotional effects of aborting a baby.

In any event, that's not the real issue. A good christian conservative like Palin should have guided her young child the right way. Isn't this traditionally seen as a failing of a parent by conservatives?

Okay,

Who ever said that Palins daughter pregnancy is an "unwanted pregnancy"? Maybe she did want to have a child. Dont you think if it wa an unwanted she would have had an abortion? Do you think this girl thinks she is carrying an unwanted baby?
You know this is just sick to what degree the far left goes to just to win elections.

Well now to the far left... a woman cannot take a public position because she will be seen as an unfit mother for her child, like her child dosent have a father that also does the parenting.

All of a sudden a woman cannot advance her career because she has a special needs child. Im sure she has a lovely family that all help out with this kid and I think her husband plays a major role. But to think this woman is not going to pay any attention to her special needs child is just sick thinking from the far left.

So what you are saying is that if you are economically wellbring that child to this world if not have an abortion  It goes beyond that buddy, either you are responsible for your own actions or not, simple as that  Those girls that have an abortion know the emotional effects of what an abortion brings. If they decide to do that they know its consequences and i dont feel sorry for them because they brought it upon themselves.

I would respect more a woman that brings a child and puts its baby up to adoption than having an abortion

She's 17, just got off a six month bout of Mononucleosis (according to school records), and she's not married. But maybe you're right, maybe she did mean to get pregnant.

Well, considering her mother believes the following:

quote:
In November 2006, then gubernatorial candidate Sarah Palin declared that she would not support an abortion for her own daughter even if she had been raped.

What about in cases of rape? Imminent danger of health to the mother? Would you not feel sorry for those women either because they "brought it upon themselves"?

Sarah Palin sure wouldn't.
