Oh wait, you only finished the first one?? Well you, then!

no, i read almost all of them; never quite finished the final one though. other books got in the way eventually...

but yeah, i found the first few hundred pages of fellowship painfully dull. i never liked hobbits as catalyst characters either, but that's coz halflings are the gay.

haha. i just never found the LOTR plot to be particularly engaging, which wasn't helped by tolkien's fascination with trees and the countryside. right, its really ing green, i get it. can we move along now? ;)

Wtf are you talking about?? The whole second and third books are pretty much all battling/war and defeating crazy bad dudes. Oh and Smeagol, lol.

LOTR was a long walk through the country. fair enough, quests are like that. but moreso than any other fantasy writer i have read, tolkien took too much time out to smell the flowers ;) doesn't mean it wasn't great, but imo the greatness was tempered with a certain level of what i like to call "writer's wank" where i was getting information that i found unnecessary to my enjoyment of the novels.

A long time ago when I first read LOTR's, the readers actually had to use their vivid imaginations to paint pictures in our head what the characters and environment looked like in these epic fantasy novels. It's not that I condemn Peter Jackson for helping 95% of the population visualize these immaculate conceptions, but he has scarred future readers for the next generations to come.

In everyone's belief system Frodo will always look like Elijah Woods, Sam will look Sean Astin, Gandalf will look like Sir Ian McKellan and Legolas will always look like pretty boy Orlando Bloom etc. forever.

Star Wars was a whole different hero's journey mythical tale because it's essence started as a movie first which branched out to books, games and other expanded universe franchises.

BTW, jennypie I don't think you're are gay just bi-curious. However, if guys do cry when reading those parts you mentioned. It definitely means we are emo fags!!! :o

I got so into this that i even read the Silmarilion .... good stuff btw .

All the stuff about the trees is sick , the Ent's rule .

Book one is hard to read ,it's realy all about the characters, names and details some stuff were not even relevant to the whole story like tom bombadil for example.... . it really gets going on the two towers.

Btw jeanny pie did you cry at the movies too???

That's just what I loved about it. Had that whole appreciate the earth/environmental/ecological kind of sub-theme going on.

I haven't seen all the movies. I fell asleep during the first one at the theater and because of that didn't bother to see the rest.

I have watched the Animated classic a few times though...but even that one I'm pretty sure I've fallen asleep every time, lol.

fair enough. im certainly not gonna argue that LOTR isnt one of the finest additions to fantasy the world has ever known. just as a teenager, i found it a little heavy on the descriptive verse.

I don't think he was irrelevant at all. Keeping with the ecology/environment theme I mentioned, I think he represents a certain god-like character. He certainly seemed to have an omnipotent kind of knowledge/presence.
