I sometimes say y'all and I've never stepped foot in Texas. Or the South really. But I did live with a guy from Alabama and a guy from Louisiana for a summer, so I chalk it up to that. |
I do this as well. I attribute to living with a girl from Texas who used it all the time.
I'm also of the ABE dialect with a stronger hint on some of the upper Midwestern pronunciations. They're especially bad now when I'm sick.
Especially my "ohhh"s. |

Ok, I'll admit it, I say y'all every now and then and I do attribute it to being in the south for the past 13ish years :/
we're fixin' to rise again though so y'all better watch yer demeanors. |

| it happens to all of this. oddly enough even though i'm from the south i don't say y'all, although i do say ain't, long while, sir/ma'am, etc. i grew up with midwesterners around too and some of them would always say "what happened?" in response to anything so i say that all the time too haha. |

If you don't say "sir" or "ma'am" down here then you're considered highly rude apparently, so I've picked that up begrudgingly. Then I gander ever so slightly. Ever so. |

question to aussie people:
just curious... when hearing a person from North America speak, can you distinguish various accents - or do you simply label them a "westerner" ? |

The 'Southern' drawl accent stands out quite a bit, as well as the NY accent (coffee = cawfee, shopping = shawpping etc.), but I don't really know enough about the other accents to really tell, I guess.
It's also quite hard for me to tell the difference between Canadians and Americans, so I have to be careful before saying like "Oh hey, what part of America are you from" as I've offended a few Canadians in the past :p |
