Team A architect: We have a web service. However, in order to fix bugs in the future we may have to change the WSDL. Everybody cool with that?

Team B architect: What? WSDL change? Well, please understand that even a spelling fix in one field inside a WSDL results in 5 days worth of work for our team.

Me: :conf:

I get this one - and 5 days is moronic - but I don't understand how that fits into the theme of this thread. Was it a case of B not knowing what WSDL is?

Value proposition - the "proposition" adds nothing.

Utilize - 'nuff said. Although there is a legitimate use for this word (when something is being used for an unexpected or unintended purpose).

Haha. These are good ones.

Jesus, I could write a book about people who like to think outside the box and leverage collective synergy to formulate key objectives into a coherent win-win game plan to improve their core competencies and complete key initiatives. But I digress.

Specifically, I think the worst ones are:

Infer - usually because the person saying it actually means imply. God I hate that so much.

Envision - how about "imagine", "picture", or just "see".

Optics - because "image" is a dirty word now.

Value proposition - the "proposition" adds nothing.

Develop - considering that this title is often (erroneously) applied to my work, maybe I shouldn't talk, but most of the time when people say this they actually mean either make or improve, which are not quite the same things.

Utilize - 'nuff said. Although there is a legitimate use for this word (when something is being used for an unexpected or unintended purpose).

Management and investment types are bad for this, but I think the worst offenders are in HR. I seriously can't listen to them, they make me want to claw my own eyes out so I can plug my ears with them.

win. I swear you work in my office.

Another one. Agile

Agile project, agile metrics, agile methodology, agile deliverable, , agile testing. you can build a whole load of crap with that.

And if you're writing a smart-sounding report and have nothing smart to report on.. I present to you - the web economy bull generator

At the end of the day, it is what it is.

Great! You have successfully wasted breath on meaningless words.

If you get upset by these phrases in particular, its probably because you keep getting told your opinion isn't going to change anything.

agile deliverable

Can't say I've ever heard that one before. Is that supposed to mean that you have a very flexible definition of whether or not you actually delivered what you promised? It would seem to suit most of the Agile shops I've dealt with.

Come to think of it "deliverable" is one of those words too. It's a very long-winded version of "thing". If that's too informal then try "item".

That may very well be the reason, but it's still not an acceptable response when overruling a recommendation. It's slightly below "because I said so" on the usefulness scale. "It is what it is" sounds, to me, like you agree with me but just don't have the balls to take it up with higher management. Fine, let me do it then. Is there a legitimate reason for why my opinion is being ignored, or is this just bull politics?

And "at the end of the day" and "going forward" are just wasted air and/or paper. But I wouldn't place them in the category of dumb people trying to sound smart - more like dumb people sounding dumb.

logistic/logistical/logistics.. like that

marginal propensity

for those that have taken any OB courses.. Practical Implications... what the is that?

cash flow........ is actually a type of accounting financial statement.. yet t pain say that "Cash flow... I need it
On time I'm talkin bank roll my money " which makes no sense at all. i know i dont expect a tpain to have a clue about accounting but it just sounds weird.

recession, im sure that 99% of the people have no idea what a recession actually is, what it consists of or why it happens.

pedagogy

ive actually seen a dishwasher classify his job as "Aquatic Technician"

pedantic

economy

in uni when people say "bell curve" the marks. the marks are bell curved its just people mean the want the mean of the bell to be shifted to the right...

"It goes without saying.." (then why say it?)

FunkyCrew
what's wrong with going forward? just today I sent an email, requesting that "...going forward, we would like to receive dividend payed out for fund X..."
you could say "in future" as well, but I think this is just a case of being a little bit more formal, but certainly not trying to be smart
